I used Krylon "Fusion" for plastic on a couple of Ren heads (painted on the inside). It changed the tone for the better, IMO. I have a black one on my Reiter and the white one is now a spare (as my other banjo requires a 10 7/8" head). I think I sprayed three coats and the paint added 3 grams to the weight of the head.
(Rats, post didn't go where I thought it would).

Could you describe some more about how the paint changed the tone?

It seems to cut some of the overtones, to me. The folks I play with says my banjo sounds fine. I think the painted Ren head is a close second to my JBalch goatskin head.
