Im thinking creating a list of expensive instruments on a public forum might be ill conceived.

I own 3 but will soon sell 1.

Culloden - Posted - 11/22/2024:  12:06:35

I don't own quite as many as Scott does but I'm not too far behind. I have nine total but they are not all resonator banjos. I have six resonator banjos plus several others in the unfinished phase. I hope to finish building them in the spring.

gospelman97 - Posted - 11/22/2024:  12:35:39

Usually 1 too many. Keeps me from buying another because I'm always needing to sell one...

lazlototh - Posted - 11/22/2024:  13:51:00

A few. About 30+ but there is a reason. (No, not insanity, I think.)

I have been making Corian pot banjo prototypes. Some are traditional Gibson style with a"stone" rim/ring. Others are variants. Most have GT Fleck necks.
Will be posting some for sale soon.

Why create a public shopping list for potential thieves?

Well, they'd have to have your full name, town, state and address in order to steal anything and most of us don't provide that information on here.  (at least I hope they don't.)

davidppp - Posted - 11/22/2024:  15:21:40

Maybe the hooligans will break a window and leave another banjo on the couch -- like some do with zucchinis.

I know that no one wants to believe it, but if they want to, they can find you. And with all the info that is on the WWW, and with all the educated computer hackers with their knowledge and technology devices it's not that hard. I realize that pride of ownership is a powerful thing and most folks like to talk about the things they own, but I just don't see the need to put it out there. As we like to say here, "It is your banjo, play it any way you want." I guess that applies to publicly listing the banos also.

I have an early 80’s Alvarez Silver Belle with a Sullivan arch top tone ring I got from Bill when he was still building banjos at his house, a 1983 Ome Juggernaut, an original 1890’s Buckbee, and a Lotus given to me by a friend that gave up trying to play.

GeeBeeThreefinger - Posted - 11/22/2024:  16:37:55

I bought too many too soon. Ima have to thin the herd sooner than later. I mostly play a prewar archtop & a Sullivan flathead pot that Tim Davis made a very sweet neck for. A couple that I don’t touch at all.

TN Time I AGREE. Some have thier town, real name, age and TMI on thier profiles. You only need name and approximate age to find most anyone in the US with a license, shipping address or vehicle.

Hint, I am not really NABY, LOL

5:

  • 1 small maker banjo made for me in 1973. My main player.

  • 2 parts banjos finished and assembled by me: walnut with RK no-hole flathead tone ring on Cooperman rim; mahogany with Gibson 4-hole archtop tone ring on mid-70s Janzegers rim

the above have my name in headstock and a MAZELTONE block

  • 1 parts banjo with some genuine Gibson content including 70s neck, resonator, tailpiece, armrest, peghead tuners. Doehler 50s/60s flange. Unknown rim and tone ring. Previous owner modified the neck to work with 1-piece flange. I have a 2000 RB-250 rim and similar era "Gisbon" stamped Crowe ring that I put in this banjo for a while, but I think it sounds better with the unknown parts. My second most played banjo.

  • 1 Rover RB-35 metal-bodied (not bottlecap) flathead that I bought to take on a schooner cruise. I use this one for travel when I don't want to lug a full weight banjo or, like this past week, when there's only enough room left in the car to squeeze in a banjo in gig bag.

tdennis - Posted - 11/22/2024:  17:32:54

Last time I took inventory I counted 45 banjos from the highest to the lowliest, including instruments from the entire banjo family. ... Too lazy to include details. I hope this satisfies your voyeuristic enquiry.

I agree, if they want to find you, they can and will but....

If  you want to keep information to yourself about your banjos, that's  your right.  No one is forcing you to divulge anything.

"If you want to keep information to yourself about your banjos, that's your right. No one is forcing you to divulge anything. "

It is a PSA not an ultimatum either way, and now another psa...

Several famous pro athletes have been robbed recently based on social media they put out. The gangs were in and out in under 15 minutes and went right to where the athletes showed them their valuables were. Happens all the time in Tucson AZ. The police there constantly warn not to post your valuables online.

Its not the number of banjos that is important, its whether you own a Harmony Reso-Tone!

GStump - Posted - 11/23/2024:  09:58:27

Well, time to chime in! The proper answer when someone asks how many banjos do you own, is "I'm not sure, I have to count them, or I have to think about it a minute."..... Also, when asked "how many banjos do you NEED," the proper answer is - "One more."

They certainly can find you!

I have several good acquaintances who work as cybersecurity specialists. They often express that the average person would be astounded if you knew how easy and how little info they need to find you!

I implore you all to take what TN time says very seriously!

Has anyone here been the victim of a home robbery?

They (the robbers) are incredibly astute, smart, perceptive and observant.

They monitor a neighborhood for weeks or even months before selecting a home or target to invade. You have a home security system and cameras do you? They can bypass that in a matter of seconds!

I am not exaggerating when I say that this thread is a very bad idea and should be deleted ASAP!

How about you not post on this thread and let others do as they wish. Leave the censorship to politicians.

FYI your user name is your real name isnt it?  Why aren't you paranoid about that?  Or are you?

"BANJO GANGS the new face of crime in Amrrica!"

America?

There are already tons of scammers that troll and call people from the classifieds. Had one member get house broke into and ended up spending thousands to buy them back from an ebay pawn shop. Someone else can post that threads link.

So yes, banjos are targeted.

Sir, with all due respect, this is not a joking matter. We already know there are a significant number of scammers that peruse these threads every week. I know you have no ill will or intent here....but the consequences of posting a list of valuable personal property.....is just not worth the risk! Criminals these days have diversified and commonly network with their cohorts in other states and countries.  It's not just your banjos they want....they know there will likely be other valuable objects in a residence where there are high end musical instruments.

I was going to say something similar.  I currently have one fewer banjos than I desire.  I do have that "one" in production so after I get it I will be happy....for about 6-9 months LOL.  Then I will be back to having one fewer than I desire.

Let's say I own a half for science. I only own one (I have not the wealth nor the space for more!) It's a wee second hand Harleh Benton with a removable resonator I took off for sound and weight but will probably stick back on if I'm ever performing outside my house again.
I've thought about selling it and buying another one, but they're the only ones you can get new in Ireland and I dont particular feel like driving half way around the country and back with no case. Sure lookit maybe someday!

Laurence Diehl - Posted - 11/24/2024:  12:41:19

I have three. I thought I only needed two - an archtop and a flathead. But then I realized I needed a spare for when one was in the shop, or as a travel banjo that won't make me quite as upset if it gets damaged.
In my defense, I do play all three and I love them all!

I own a maple Hatfield and a mahogany Hatfield. I love the sound of both of them and the mahogany is very sweet, but the maple has some real special tones to it. I have a 1980's Stew Mac Eagle kit archtop. and I have a Gold Tone AC1 (weighs about 3 lbs) which I got after a surgery whose recovery prevented me from lifting anything.
I do like Raymond Fairchild did on his bus. I keep a rattlesnake around my banjos. So beware.

Raymond also kept a loaded.45 in his banjo case. Don't ask me how I know this.

So that I won’t be vulnerable to a burglary, I have a Degas bottle cap, a Framus with a cracked heel, and a plastic-like Harmony from the oily 1970’s.

Out of fear of burglars in MY neighborhood, I keep my MOST prized banjo at my Very Best Friend's house, and do not reveal her address to anybody.

Not even to my wife.

It's a gold-plated, pre-war Gibson, and the inlays have been replaced with cunning duplicates, made from a mixture of ORIGINAL Krazy Glue and a powder made from the fingernail clippings of Earl Scruggs, Pete Seeger, Doc Watson, and Milwaukee's own Ken Haferman.

Currently own one.
My Bishline Classic.
First banjo Rob Bishline sold.
Serial #005.
At one time I owned three.
A Stelling, the Bishline and a Stealth.
I think two is a good number for me and wish I had the money to get a second one.
Being retired and on a budget sure puts a damper on spending.

Among my banjos I have 2 with resonators (apparently the OP is only interested in these); a Harmony and a Slingerland. Unless you are including zither banjos, in which case add another couple.

Damn ! Once again the USA shows its superiority. Most of our burglars are opportunist junkies. The 'astute, smart, perceptive and observant' crooks tend to be attracted to other careers, such as finance, law or a profession I'm not allowed to mention.
