I believe I have a new “favorite” college football coach. He should run for governor when he is done coaching, then prez.

Like Nick Saban, I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't get out of coaching before too long due to all of the portal and NIL mess that has taken over college football.  I think that is why Saban retired.  I think Dabo is fine with the NIL, and should be, but combined with the portal where other colleges are contacting your players and offering big buck to transfer, or athletes hiring agents and demanding more money to stay at your school is a little too much.

Another famous collegiate football coach was elected to the Senate. He thought that World War Two was fought to free Europe of Socialism, and that the three branches of government were the House, the Senate and special teams.

Sounds like he has a better grasp of history than 90% of the folks up there.  Wonder if he has been to all 53 states.

I can't keep up with how many states there are now.  Last I knew Texas, Utah, and at least part of Montana seceded, but we bought Greenland.  Seems like there's a transfer portal for states as well as college athletes.  wink

Back in 1988, there was a book called

Seems like a good, but difficult, way to think.

All of you NIL fans are going to love what's coming next. originally, the idea was to recover a fee to the university and the player for making millions by using their trademarks likenesses, images, etc. in Video games like Madden Sports. Then it expanded to paying to use players to sell crap on tv.
Here's the latest as far as "Professional" college sports goes. You're going to love this. The University of Tennessee has just added new fees to all their ticket and season ticket prices. it's called a 'talent" fee. So get ready for all your ticket prices to increase greatly across all NCAA Sports. Getting out of hand? I think so, ...but they're not finished yet.

Oh yeah and it is getting worse.  The UNLV quarterback has quit the team and will put himself in the portal.  After having three good games he hired an agent and now has demanded to renegotiate his NIL contract.  His coach said that UNLV had lived up to their agreement and will not renegotiate.  I think we are seeing the tip of the iceberg.

I suspect Mr. Swinney means "I couldn't care less ... " when he says "I could care less..." about what "you" and "people" say/write, but I wonder if this outlook has been in place throughout his whole career.  And I dunno whether he's referring to one or a few reporters or to the media in general or to "everybody" .... I figure that surely there's gotta be some people somewhere whose opinions and viewpoints he values.

... or did I miss the boat?

It reminds me of Theoren Fleury of the Calgary Flames 'way back stating that the fans meant diddly-squat to him; the only thing that mattered was his team mates.  I figured "it" would have been good had somebody done some internet organizing to have all the fans [who after all pay the bills] boo incessantly while he was on the ice .... until he "revisited" his take on things.

Any more nits to pick, Owen?smiley  I think most people pretty much got what he was talking about ...... even you!

"Couldn't care less" and "could care less" are both used to mean someone doesn't care at all, but English teachers and grammarians will say that only "couldn't care less" is correct, so that is what you should use in formal or academic writing."

Fwiw, I've long been a bit skeptical, or "wondered about" people that see/hear/speak no evil, or never know "doubt."  Like Mr. Swinney says there's a choice to be made .... see things as they actually are or see a somewhat skewed version .... it has nothing to do with doing things to please others or have the opinions of others dictate one's actions/outlook, IMNSHumbleO.

I didn't hear the original question, but what I saw was Mr. Swinney making it pretty clear that he was chastising some lesser schmuck for asking the wrong question.

The posts re. NIL and agents and portals had me questioning whether I was off in the rhubarb.

Did I "get" what he was talking about?

Owen, I think the question that the guy did not get to finish was "do you want to stick it ...... to those people who criticized you for your lackluster performance, especially on offense the past couple of years".

Little background ..... Clemson was at the top of the heap several years back and went to the 4 team championship play-off six years in a row, winning two of them.  Since that time his teams have been good, but not great, winning at least 9 or 10 games every year.  Even with that, there has been a lot of grumbling and criticism, especially since he does not use the "portal" to get better players that he has on his roster.  He believes in the players he recruits from high school , whom he promises to develop into better players and even better people.  Now that our offense is clicking and looking good, the questioner was wondering if he wanted to "stick it to" those who had criticized him the past couple of years.  Thus, the "I could care less" and "I don't pay attention to those people" comments.

Thanks for the info, John .... I'm a pretty casual acquaintance of most NCAA stuff, but his eschewing portal players gets a yes from me.  I can see where "sticking it to _____ "  wouldn't/shouldn't be a priority by a long shot, but he'd have to be superhuman to not gain at least some satisfaction, no?

It reminds me of reading in Sports Illustrated m-a-n-y moons ago about a coach whose team had [big] upset one of the top-ranked teams in  ___?___ .  The guy's opening remark at the post-game press conference was: "Get out your wide-angle lenses Boys .... I'm gonna start smiling."
