From all indications I live well within the cone of the area where the latest hurricane is supposed to hit sometimes next Thursday. I don't fret over bad weather, just hate the idea of losing electricity and the inconvenience that goes along with no juice; fretting over food spoiling in the fridge and freezer, not being able to cook, etc. However, with many people living in flood zones, etc., I know their situation is more problematic than mine. In any event, if you are living in the strike zone, stay safe. Also, I think that if they would stop naming these storms before they hardly start to form they wouldn't get too bad. Kind of, if you name the thing it feels obligated.

12-15 inches of rain in the southern Appalachians has to produce floods.
This may be the worst hurricane ever.

Hope some of that rain makes it to Ohio. We've got barely a half inch of rain all month. And exactly a half inch in all of August.

It's pretty much guaranteed to shut down power for some weeks.

I'm worried about the possible death toll.

I don't know about NOT naming them.

Pretty sure that naming them like "Hurricane Gentle" or "Tropical breeze "Whispy" won't make them any less destructive, either.

Somebody wrote this in a book about selling at an outdoor art fair:

"Remember that Mother Nature is NOT your friend."

Hope you come through it ok Bobby. We are going to be right on the edge of it and hope it calms down a bit when we get it. We don't need any trees down and power outages.

At 6:35 pm EST, Helene is now Cat. 4 and headed right for Tallahassee. Looks like it will hit the coast around 4 am. Best wishes to all in its path.

From what I got on the news this morning it barreled through Florida and headed northwest. No information on damages or people injured or worse. Guess that will come later after daylight and time to look around.

EDIT:  Just checked the internet news and here's the latest:  aol.com/helene-strengthens-cat...7363.html

I just got a message that my relatives in Tallahassee are safe. Helene went pretty much right over top of them.

We came through it in great shape and ever better, our family in the Tallahassee area did as well. Said they did a property walk about 3:30am and all appeared well. We had scads of rain but hardly any wind to be concerned with. Thanks for the remarks and well wishes. Glad all the rest of you were safe if you were affected.

I've got to check on my sister in Tenn. Evidently her phone service and cell reception are both out. Hope she's okay.
