Just had a NOS Samsung dishwasher installed, replacing my 20-odd-year-old KitchenAid. To my surprise, it has no air-dry feature, something the KA had all those years ago. I haven’t used the dry cycle on the old dishwasher since it was new, saved a lot of electricity over the years. Now I’ll have to monitor the new one for when it finishes so I can turn it off and open it up for the dishes to dry.

With a small problem in the sprinkler head our Kitchen Aid needed a new part. After digging out the original invoice I discovered it was 31 years old. They don't make those parts anymore so I adapted 2 pipes together with a long piece of chrome tape. Its been like that for about a month now but we have now decided to look for another one. A Bosch is at the top of our list. It also has no air drying. Samsung makes good stuff but they have had a long reputation around here of not having parts available and not having trained technicians available. We have had a Samsung range for 7 years and it has been great. The other problem is that we had a ceramic tile floor added about 15 years ago. The resulting height of the opening is now 1/2 smaller. We may have to settle for a Whirlpool or other shorter machine. Our friend the appliance technician is visiting us on October 1st to measure carefully and give us some advice.

My Samsung was a freebie. If I’d had to pay for one, I’d have gotten another KitchenAid.

Kitchen Aid is now a subsidiary of Whirlpool. I don't know if they are still bombproof, but we just had our 47 year old stand mixer refurbished, and it almost looks and runs like new. On the dishwasher front, we like the Bosch. It's quiet and does a good job, plus last time I needed help with it, they still had a person on the helpline who could talk me through a fix. Remember personal service?

My rolling Kenmore dishwasher was bought used for $50 in 1994.
Still ticking.

This house was built before dishwashers were a standard appliance.
So the plumbing & electrical to reach from the sink to the ONLY place we could install one, was abut equal to the price of the machine.
But, I'm 79, so I imagine it MAY last the rest of my life.

Surprise, surprise everyone. Many foreign type dishwashers have “heat dry” which takes the place of “air dry”. Bosch is one example. Just let the cycle finish and wait awhile. When you open the door sometime later you will be met with a gust of heat. Tupperware and plastics may need to be towel dried. Glad this helps. Twenty years of selling this type of product.

A heated dry cycle has always been standard on dishwashers. But it takes power and puts plastic stuff on the lower shelf at risk.

Right, Bill. We have a Kitchen Aid but plastic always goes on top. The water heater pushes up the temp on many foreign dw and because of the higher heat, the dishes dry by condensation and of course when you open it up, the air hits the hot air leaving and aids the drying process.

All proving that once manufacturers of just about anything get their hands on digital tech, the idea that simpler is better goes out the window.

About a year ago the smell of rancid smoke went through the house. It was caused by a pot scrubbing pad which fell from the dishwasher dish rack on to the heating element. If you have have to machine wash those things be sure and put it on the upper rack only. The chances of it falling through 2 racks is very slim.

A couple of our daughters really like their Miele brand dishwashers.

The house we bought 2011ish came with a built-in 2008 Maytag, which works as it should, but our go-to is the manual KISS models circa 1946 and 1950.
