I had a client request for a mini version of his old Gibson bowtie flyswatter. He wanted it built for his son who is learning to play. This is the first sunburst finish that I have done, or even attempted in the past. So as not to hide the curly grain of the maple, I stained the wood progressively instead of using colored lacquer. It came out kinda nice for a first try!

Marvin, your work never ceases to amaze me. That is a beautiful job.

Just in case anybody is wondering, the neck block doesn't say "MASTERTONE", it says "MINITONE". :)

Very sharp. Love the sunburst. Did you do the concentric rings on resonator back after staining?
Thanks for posting.

No, after staining. The binding didn't absorb the stain. I sanded the rings with fine sandpaper after staining to remove it from the top surface.

Yes. I made the one on this banjo using mylar, aluminum U-channel, and Kiltz.

What do you normally make the width of the neck up at the heel where it meets with the pot?

I lay out the fret board for 1.8" at the 19th fret. I shape the neck after the fret board is mounted. Binding is added after that, which makes the neck slightly wider. Since each neck is shaped by hand, I've never actually measured the neck width at the pot. Here's a video of neck building of a mini that I made 10 years ago...
