Despite the dark, haunting melody, the lyrics to this song are about hope and perseverance, and were composed in a German concentration camp in the 1930s. This is an instrumental arrangement in thumb-lead two-finger style.
"Dann ziehen die Moorsoldaten
Nicht mehr mit dem Spaten
Ins Moor"
Thanks for listening. Tab is attached if you are interested.

At first, I didn't recognise the song from its English title and listened to your recording when it was listed on the BHO entry page. It took me a while to understand that it was the "Moorsoldatenlied", a song that had me spellbound the first time we sang it in school. It fits the banjo very well! Thanks for the recording, it is a very special song!

Thank you Phillip. Fascinating commentary. Yes, I think in the US and elsewhere, "Peat Bog Soldiers" is the better known title. The English translations of the original German lyrics are variable too, but they all convey that same message of hope and resilience. Regardless, as you say, it is spellbinding, universally.

I grew up in the late 1940s with the English version. We had, and I still have the 78s, "Lied Der Moorsoldaten", 6 Songs for Democracy, Songs of the International Brigade, Keynote Records, Inc, 1940.

Wow, that record is almost a historical document! Could you digitalise it? The Spanish civil war had only ended a year before the release of the record.

Right now my electronic turntables are not working. I haven't tried my portable 78 player in a while, but maybe I'll try it in the near future.

Thanks Jake. Just at the point of looking for a new tune to learn and this one is beautiful, with history (haven't they all).
