Hello Banjoists. Recently purchased a high-end banjo where the owner (who never took it up) left it in its case in his unheated garage for several (don't know how many) years. While the banjo survived, some of the metal on/near the pot acquired a green tarnish. Its not mold but perhaps a related impact on the metal.

SO ... I ask, what substance (cleaner) do you folks suggest to use to treat/clean the metal to resore its beauty?

I thank any/all for your suggestions. j

When there is green crusty stuff, I remove it with metal polishing compound often with a buffing wheel. I end up with bare brass which looks better than green crusty stuff. Many here will disagree with using any abrasive compound on plated metal.

I agree with Rob. Sometimes, especially with newer (say post-1920) banjos suffering from extreme fung like yours is. I use Simichrome, a light abrasive that I would not use for a light cleanup.
