Does anyone know of a website designed for banjo players where you can actually learn something without being badgered to buy, T shirts, finance, borrow money, buy anti virus software etc etc etc

I suspect in todays internet environment, the answer will almost always be NO. Many of these niche' websites don't charge fees or anything like that to subscribe to or browse as often as one may wish, but the website is NOT free to the owner, so the most obvious answer to "paying the bills" for the website is to sell space to companies that will advertise. Aggravating? Yes. But so aggravating as to prevent most from visiting the website? No.

I would check out Banjo Ben Clark and Artistworks. Neither are free but the teachers have to get paid and they’re both affordable for what you get.

Maybe install some ad blocking software and use whichever site or sites best suit your learning style?

Yes Banjo Hangout running a decent ad blocker. I use Firefox with No Script and Ad Blocker Ultimate and never see an ad here or nearly everywhere else. I haven't seen an as on Youtube for years (unless I watch a videp through my TV).

Salvation Army, Rescue Mission, some local churches serve lunch once a month, and there are some local ministries that serve once a week. You just have to know their schedule.

You can find just about anything you want to learn about banjo on youtube. Much more bearable with web browser extensions to block ads (uBlock Origin) and theres even an extension that auto-skips sponsored content in youtube videos (SponsorBlock). Archive.org has lots of scanned banjo method books from the late 1800's / early 1900's which are free to view as PDFs. Speaking of PDF's you can find just about any book you want in PDF format if you know where to look.. Between that and the library of almost 9000 tabs here on BHO I've never had a shortage of any learning material.

The above is the best up-to-date advice re: software choices.
I pay for youtube premium as I use it a lot and want the creators to get paid, so ublock isn't as necessary on that site.. but man is sponsorblock [this message brought to you by NORDVPN!] nice to have.
I also like how sponsorblock can skip non-music sections of music videos. Nice when you have a playlist and don't want the talking at the start/end.

This is a site I visit once in a while when researching tunes. This is for claw hammer style playing. The site is generously hosted by h]Hangout member Linda Littleton and is free, though she does accept contributions.

If you want to learn to play the banjo, & to get away from opinionating, editorialization, marketing, & trolling, there is nothing to compare with YouTube. The only requirerment is a bit of searching skills.

"Maybe the government can provide one." Why not? Free housing, free cell phones, free food, free credit card and damn it, why not a free banjo? banjered

I am pretty sure that there are some online subscription banjo sites which just offer courses; which don't include any other advertising; as the site is paid for via subscription fee rather than advertising.
Might check out PegHead Nation, or Artistworks, or Trufire or such. I've never used those, so can't offer recommendation or input as to quality, just that they do exist; if that's what you are looking for.

You need a good ad blocker. Or... join the players union and that'll take care of all the ads and also help the Hangout to stay afloat.

Just for the record, my facetious, indeed ludicrous, suggestion that the government might provide a free banjo instruction website was made with tongue firmly planted in cheek.

What are you actually looking for from a website? You can look at mine, called My Banjo World. Everything is free -- lots of mp3s and tabs, though it may not be what you're looking for.
