Hi, I'm a beginner and would love to join a group in Northern Virginia to observe and learn.

Welcome to the Hangout.
Since you're here in the clawhammer and old-time section, I think you'll want to look into CABOMA - the Capital Area Bluegrass and Old-Time Music Association. Link: caboma.org/
Also the DC Bluegrass Union. dcbu.org/ But you might find fewer clawhammer players there.

Thank you -- will do. Do you know of any Meet-up groups of Banjo players? Since I'm a very beginner-beginner I don't want to bore the pro's :-)

Are you Ruthie with the horses that I knew from a few years back?
If so, Hi!
If not, still saying Hi!

Interesting, you have a doppelganger in the area, with the same name!
I'm a newbie also, and have learned so much from reading on here.

Interesting that I have a Doppelgänger! I would love to get together with some other newbies -- do you know of any meetups?

I don't know of any because I'm too busy with work and critters to go anywhere, sorry!

No, I don't. But you might be able to find other players of your level through DCBU or CABOMA.
And also the Folklore Society of Greater Washington, which I forgot about. Here's their calendar.
Way back in the 80s, before there was DCBU, I went to one or two of their jams that used to be at the Washington Ethical Society on 16th St in upper NW. I see from their calendar they have an old-time jam in Takoma Park, third Wedensday of the month at Busboys and Poets. That's actually in the Takoma neighborhood of DC (technically not Takoma Park, which is Maryland) and is just two short blocks from the Takoma Metro station. I would expect all levels of players go to these jams. It would be a good way to meet people you can see outside the jam.
