never played around with the bridge on my banjo
it's a deering vega senator bluegrass special I purchase used
after some research here on this site, I set out to check things out last night
wound up moving the bridge almost a 1/4" back after checking all strings
against the fretted 12th, it was also a 1/16" out of square to start
what a huge difference, rechecked the head tension at 90
wow, that thing is now crackin, unreal how good it sounds
never figured it could be that far out
thanks for the info

Glad to hear the tweaking worked out so well. Yup, banjos are adjustable, aren't they ![]()
Too bad some folks will never know, nor will will they ever hear their banjos' full capabilities...

Friday night I started messing around again
noticed the neck was bowed out .020
adjusted the neck rod and brought it down to .012
was easier to fret, and seemed to get rid of a bit of hum I had on the fourth
string
after adjusting, bridge was off again. so I re-adjusted the bridge and had to move it back another 1/8"
seems very touchy as to how much adjustment you can do and have it come out of tone very quickly
maybe it's just this banjo, all is good now, back to crackin and sounding good
just need to improve in playing it, but practice is going good and I am seeing a very slow but steady improvement

another question I have , the bridge seems to be moving back to get the tone correct. which is fine,
then I was thinking that if the tail piece was moved up slightly,
raised up from the head
would that in effect cause the bridge to be move towards the neck?
or is a position of the tailpiece not as critical as the rest of it

I put a Prucha Presto tailpiece on my banjo. The Prucha Presto seems to sound fuller when it is about the width of a nickel up off the ring than it does if it is adjusted down as far as it will go. A man of little experience here, but that was my experience changing the tailpiece out.
