There's a current thread describing problems with the tension hoop interfering with notes on the upper frets on a banjo that has had a recent issue Remo top-frosted high crown head installed. And I'm experiencing a similar problem with my own instrument. I don't play up there much, so it shouldn't matter much to me, but it's bothersome knowing that things aren't quite right. And yes, I installed the head "by the book."
I'm wondering if a recent run of top-frosted heads left the factory with crowns that are slightly lower than usual-- 1/32" would be enough to make a difference.
Anyone else experiencing similar problems with recent high-crown heads?

I have recently (last six months) received two 11" Remo heads marked High crown that were without question medium crown height.

I recently bought a medium crown fiberskin head from Deering advertised as a direct replacement for their Americana models. Nope. I had to make a cut-out in the tension hoop to make it playable. Also of note is that it was extremely tight to get on the rim. And there is so much glue on the flesh hoop, that the tension hoop and flesh hoop don’t make contact (you can see the gap in the photo). But it does play and sound great, so play on.
