My favorite player for UCLA, the Portland Trailblazers, and Boston Celtics passed away today at 71. His outlook on life was infectious as a sportscaster in his later years..

Quite a few years back he was a motivational speaker (?) at an annual conference (?) attended by my daughter/SIL. Although neither are particularly "sports-minded" that part remains one of their more memorable conferences.
I'm too lazy to check into it, but a bit of lore (?) that I'm fond of is that prior to his first game, the TrailBlazers had a [real] "psychologist" give the pep-talk. When he finished, the story has it that Walton jumped to his feet and exhorted, "Okay, time to go kick some ****in' azz." ... which kinda deflated/upstaged/?? the psychologist's effort.
RIP, Sir.

Definitely marched to a different beat. I'll never forget an NCAA final game where I think he made 21 of 22 shots ...... mostly short range but still fantastic.
