THe bass around here, on Long Island, NY, are too smart. Seems when a new type lure comes out, everyone uses it, and as a result the bass get too used to it. THey basically come up to it, look at it for a few seconds and merrily swim away. There is incredible fishing pressure here. Now trout on the other hand... I live near a state fish hatchery, and I trout fish the out flow from there (perfectly legal). Trout seem to be far less picky, once you know what they want and will gladly gobble up their favorites over and over.
I do like the idea of making your own custom bass lures though! One way to make sure they haven't seen it a thousand times before! Good fishin'!

One of my favorite types of bass fishing is w/ a fly rod & surface lures . Bass from my experience are very finicky fish & may hit on just about anything if they are in the mood . I've fished so many places , usually out of a boat where one evening they are hitting like crazy & the next , same area & weather --- nothing ? Biggest problem is getting a hooked one out of the lily pads w/o breaking the leader . A used to be favorite place is the Chenango river nearby but trying to get a place to park anymore since they've redone the roads is difficult !

Never made my own but have tweaked store bought lures and made them a little bit better. Like the tiny torpedo I would loosen up the screw holding the propeller just enough to make the prop spin better and made it rattle. Then I would bend the blades a bit more to make it spit more water when retrieved. Caught more fish.

BTW I have a pre-war ball bearing Rapala, in near mint condition, only fished a few times. Comes with hang tags and hard shell case, a steal at $4000.

I made one couple years ago. I was going to use it for surf fishing along the Texas coast.
I wanted one with some weight to it, to get some distance. But I wanted it to be mostly top water. And it needed to be able to pop.
I wanted it to have some swimming action.
I also wanted it to cause a helluva commotion and throw up a rooster tail.
I hollowed out a piece of walnut and put a ball bearing in it, then glued another piece to it to seal in the ball bearing.
I took a big propeller from another lure and put it on the back.
I don’t like treble hooks so I went with single hooks.
It does everything I wanted, except catching fish!

I tie flies for trout but have never messed with lures, crank baits, etc that are intended to be used with spinning rods for bass. Just something I never got around to.

Saddest year of ice fishing in my 62 years!!! Just lost a 15 year old through the ice 2 days ago near here. 2 kids on a snowmobile and went through, and only one made it out. Damn shame and the kids family saw it happen and ran out onto the lake to rescue and they ended up breaking through too!!! I can’t imagine their anguish!!!
Common sense and my gut feeling is keeping me off the ice this year even though I know plenty of guys out there. Normally I would, but I just have a bad vibe this year and don’t need any more surprises!!!

When I was a kid, one of my favorite bass lures was a Johnson's Silver Minnow, a single hook spoon that swam, hook up. Add a pork rind, and it was deadly. Hardly ever got hung up in lily pads. I had those things in chrome, gold, & black. My tackle box contained every variety of pork rind known to man. 
For a while, they were all I fished.
When I got serious about fly-fishing, & of course, tying my own bass flies, I also discovered float tubes. That's a whole nuther world from conventional tackle, treble hook lures, & mega buck bass boats. My go-to fly eventually became a huge Rabbit Fur snake/night crawler/whatever. Simple easy to tie, inexpensive materials, even more effective & versatile than the spoon!

JD, you brought back some old memories. My grandfather was an avid fisherman and my father wanted nothing to do with it. When my grandfather died I was only 4 yrs old and only have 2 memories of him. My father gave away all of his dads fishing and hunting gear not knowing I would love fishing and hunting. When I was older and my grandmother passed, we were cleaning out the house and garage and I found a box filled with jars of every color pork rind possible. The lids were so corroded I cut myself pretty damn bad trying to open one. He also had a old velvet bag in the box filled with Johnson minnows . I still have the bag and a few Johnson’s left that I cherish!!!

Save your hands, turn those corroded jars of pork rinds upside down & spray around the threads with Kano Aerokroil. Let it soak overnight, & spray again. Make sure the jars are free of oil, turn the jars upright & take a couple strap wrenches to those corroded jar lids.
I also have quite a bit of Grandpa's fishing tackle, ranging from multi piece cane poles to stainless steel bait casting rods with s.s. windings on the guides, & s.s. level wind casting reels.

I just found a Johnny Oneils Weed Wing propeller spoon that I forgot I had.
A large mouth bass will eat anything it can get in its mouth. Somewhere in all my paraphernalia, I have a baby bird fly. It only works around flooded trees, & then only in early spring. But it's a blast to fish that thing.

To add to the varied lures bass may hit on , one year there at the cape the bass were hitting so well some guys were catching them on Twizzlers candy strips w/ a steel leader thru the strip & hooks at the end .

Before I discovered the snake fly, I was really into fly-rod Bass poppers. Unsatisfied with the common store bought variety, I started saving wine bottle corks, & making my own. I then discovered molded styrofoam popper heads which could be mounted either way. Simply tie the tail of the fly & push the popper head on whichever way you wanted when it came time to use it. Wine bottle corks ain't real cork anymore.

Well went out n test run the new plug..
So far so good..
It pop/dives the way i thought it would..
But a slow crank..made a perfrct side to side paddle of a swimming mouse..
Reeling quickly..did not perform well tho..
Gonna ad a tail(mouse) type

I made bobbers from wine corks, made weedless bugs from foam ear protection (I think I invented that, but never researched it???), and I also in the past made jigs during the winter and turned wood for copies of my old simple favorite, the Midge-Orena in red and white, amini version of the Bass-Orena.
