With all the account hacking and subsequent bogus ads going on here on BHO lately why not purge inactive accounts to reduce the risk. Any reason for not cleaning house? Anyone who hasn't logged in for 3-5 years has probably lost interest and they can always rejoin later if they decide to. At least deactivate their accounts. These scammers are getting smarter and smarter so why make it so easy for them? I almost lost $2000 to one yesterday and I consider myself quite thorough and cautious.

Policy around purging inactive accounts is a classic discussion on social media. By and large, the answer is that it's a decent amount of legwork for the admin, it carries the risk of deleting actual user accounts, and it provides marginal (if any) benefit to the website or it's users. Deactivating does nothing because if a scammer can access a deactivated account, they can follow the steps to reactivate that account. Most scam accounts are new rather than old, and if they are old they're typically inactive for a long time before they start scamming again. Most scammers are copying known scam methods, there's really only about half a dozen scam methods that all scammers use, so they're easy to spot once you know them. There's a reason that very few websites on the internet purge accounts for inactivity, and it's not because they haven't thought of it.
Glad you didn't get scammed. I'm curious what the scam was, something new perhaps? As I always say, requiring a 5-minute voice call prior to any transaction will eliminate 99.9999999% of all scammers.

This guy was good. Had valid answers to all my questions and produced additional pictures of everything I asked for but one item. He even sent me a picture of the banjo with a hand written date stamp next to the banjo and other pertinent information. Perfect spelling and English. The only way I got him was I noticed that the handwriting on the dated paper looked too perfect. Yep, it was photoshopped in. Here's the funny part, he had tomorrow's date on it which told me he was scamming from overseas. After noticing that I took a more thorough look online and found the same banjo expired on Reverb and noticed a major discrepancy in location. From there I finished him off when I asked for pictures that I knew he couldn't replicate from Reverb and he stopped responding and dropped off the face of the earth.

Potential purging is up to Eric. I have no idea what would be involved or how purging decisions might be made.

I like keeping the old accounts. There are often things they have posted that are of great value.

Speaking of the purge... we should have one day a year where we suspend the no politics/religion rule. Wouldn't it be fun?!!! ![]()

Subscribe to a newspaper with blogs or do yahoo mail and make comments. You can get as deep into it as you want, But I love having a place that is free of the the controversies you mention.

Ebay and google purge accounts that have been inactive for 2 years. ICBD.
But here yhere is one guy, far to big an ask.

eBay and Google are a tad larger than BHO and face issues with government regulators that probably suggest purging accounts is necessary for their well-being.

Might be fun for you, but it would be difficult for the moderators.
I'm on another forum that allows politics and the people on there are nasty beyond belief. Not necessarily in bad language but in the way they treat anyone that disagrees with them. I do my best to stay away from any of their conversations.

Yes, civility is dead in this country thanks to (fill in the blank).

I’ll bite on that one. I think it’s the internet—because it made attacks so easy and impersonal, not to mention anonymous and widespread.

I dunno Bill ...^^ almost makes it sound like there was a pent up desire/need/?? within peoples' mindsets/psyches/?? that was just waiting for something to come along so it could manifest (?) itself.
[And the usual disclaimer for anybody who can't tell by ^^ ... I'm no psychologist, sociologist, etc.]
