One of the most common things I get asked about are my thoughts on right hand technique and how to develop better technique.  I made this video with my thoughts.  I hope this is helpful to some!

One thing i notice about many beginners is that they want to play fast right away. and that causes their right hands to tighten up and lose that fluidity that must always accompany speed. I cannot stress enough to beginners to SLOW DOWN and keep that right hand relaxed and in that letter ,"C" look and a avoiding the "fly away fingers" habit.
Play no faster than you can think is a good motto to go by. ( i may have to slow waaaay down lol)

Very thorough and clear.  And shows how all the parts function together.

Thanks.

I never thought about the third pivot you explained. I do sometimes hit the head with the thumb pick (despite using a very short thumb pick). When that happens, I will think about your advice! Thanks a lot!

Hi Gabe,

Listened to your advice about using your  R. H. and other advice. Excellent tutorial Gabe. The thumb hitting the head is always bound to happen once in a while. Look at most of the Pros banjo heads. Always a thumb scrape or two...Thanks a lot Gabe...Jack Baker

Gabe,

Thanks for sharing all your insights, it is an invaluable help to me beginning this banjo journey. As a guitar player (not classical) I always anchor my left pinky and have been struggling with the 2-finger anchor. I had read that it's not necessary to use 2 but this help me validate the that using my pinky is ok. Your insights are a treasure to this community.

How did you deal with that injury? I have been dealing with pain and tightness in the same spot you pointed to, but in both my first and middle finger. It's been about six months since the first major flair up. Now that I'm paying a lot more attention to tension, it's not nearly as bad as it was in the first two months, but I'm worried it will never completely go away.

My injury took many many years for me to stop feeling it in any way. I will still get aching if I'm not careful and play too much without a break. Early on when I first got the injury I rested my hand for several weeks and didn't play. After the pain went away I focused a lot on my technique and found that if I played for too long I would feel an ache there. When I felt the ache again I would take a break. As the years went along I would feel the aching in that joint less and less and the flare ups would be fewer and further between.
