For those of you who attend banjo / bluegrass camps, do find bringing a digital recorder to be useful? Why /why not? Thanks!

When I was attending banjo camp, I always took a recorder. I purchased one that not only recorded but you could plug it in your computer and download whatever you wanted to work on. To me, it was a necessity. You get so much information in a class setting and it was just impossible to remember, grasp, all that info. When I got home, I could then listen to whichever session I wanted to and almost always learned something that my brain didn't remember after class.

I can't think of any reason not to have one.

I agree with Sherry about the value of recording sessions at camp. Most instructors I have encountered not only allow it; they encourage it. Years ago, I recored a workshop with Adam Hurt on a cassette recorder. I was later able to use some software to convert the cassette tape to digital files. I now have a Tascam digital recorder that works well.

A cell phone works pretty well with video and audio capabilities. There are good recording apps as well as the built in video apps. Digital recorders (I have one) are great but don’t have video.

I used to use a digital recorder for workshops and classes but these days, my iPhone and a couple of backup battery packs works perfectly.

Here’s the back up battery I use - no extra cords needed.

No way you can remember all the good stuff they told and showed you. If you don't have one, used smart phones from a thrift store are dirt cheap and take great vids.
