Super cool banjo rolling backup in this song. Sounds like Lots of standard Scruggs licks over Dminor. I’m trying to figure it out. I think it’s an alternative tuning. Anyone ever messed with this?

Fun fact:

Violent Femmes started as a 3 piece band, busking on the streets of Milwaukee,.

Here's a link to "Country Death Song" for anybody wants to work it out.

Gnarly song, it rocks and i've always loved it. Have to put it on my banjo wish list. Its so damn dark.

Is this the version you're referring to: youtube.com/watch?v=FWZf_RBcB_Y ?

It seems to be in sawmill tuning (G tuning with the 2nd string raised to C); I'm not sure about the 5th string. The giveaway is those 7th-fret harmonics at 2:36.

Quick google search and I found out that it was Tony Trischka. Lol. Maybe I’ll just ask him.
