This weekend I found a fantastic issue of Sing Out magazine, containing 62 folksongs from America & around the world. It seems like a quintessential time capsule of the folk music scene at it's peak. Published in 1960, this was a special issue which was a compendium of the last 10 years of Sing Out publications. The songs were selected as the best examples of the genre.
I wonder how many of these songs do you recognize, & how many have you learned.

At least acquainted with most. Played a few. Maybe 20-23% of the titles unfamiliar.

I’ve got two or three of these songbooks from the 1960s, picked up in second hand bookshops in more recent years. They have quite a mixture of songs, drawn from from traditional to contemporary folk, blues, country and bluegrass, world music, etc. although some of the settings/arrangements might be different or simplified. About half of the songs would be unfamiliar, even at the time, but I think the idea was to expose people to the rich heritage of traditional songs, as well as publicise some new songs by rising stars on the folk scene, like Joni Mitchell, Tom Paxton and someone called Bob Dylan. I guess it was the Youtube of its day for broadcasting songs that you would probably not ever get to hear on the radio.

I have a whole pile of Sing Out Magazines dated from around the late 50's including one or more of the reprints. They are currently in my loft awaiting a new home other than the re-cycling bin. My loft is in London.

I picked up a couple of books that were just the songs from many volumes --nice and handy -especially in the pre net days--brings to mind an era I missed --beat nicks and hootnannies

Well at this time I just play/sing Buffalo Skinners and Woody's Pasture of Plenty. You just gotta be careful playing folk songs with a banjo, police could show up any time and arrest you for impersonating a musician. banjered

There were 12 volumes of the Reprints. I sold a complete set on e-Bay few years back. There are two compilation volumes of the entire series that you can also find. They are a great collection. I still have scanned copies in case I need to look up a song.

I recognize 7; I've got some work to do. I have a songbook from SingOut Publications, Rise Up Singing, which has words/chords to 1200 songs. There's some overlap with this list. It's a great collection, though I don't know the tune for many of the songs in the book.
