Looking for recommendations for a comfortable and ergonomic chair for playing banjo/reso/guitar.

I alternate between a piano stool and a Ikea Franklin (folding high stool with backrest) when not standing. The important things are that there are no armrests and that you can choose to sit somewhat upright.

Do you have specific physical issues/ailments that need to be catered to?

I carry a folding "parsons chair" I got at Bed Bath & Beyond. Wooden and well padded. Cheap when on sale!

I've found the kitchen highchair w/ fold out steps to be ideal. There are no armrests, & the steps allow me to change my leg position over a period of time.

I use a regular padded office chair with wheels and no arms. The height is adjustable and it swivels.

I use a better quality folding chair with padded back and seat, and cut 3/4" - 1" off the front legs so the seat is level instead of tilted back. All you need is a hacksaw and a package of rubber chair tips from Ace Hardware.

I'm most comfortable when my seat is not higher than my knees.  For me, that's a seat height of about 16 1/2".  I'm not tall, so that might be too low for someone who is.

That folding "parsons chair" from Bed Bath and Beyond looks interesting.  If I decided to pick one up, I would be prepared to adjust the height if necessary.

I'll add that I've had one of the folding parsons chairs for 10 yrs and I'm 350+lbs...it is a very strongly built chair! Substantial cushioning too.

Downside is that it doesn't fold as flat as a standard steel folding chair and it is heavier.

THese days (and have been for several years now) I have to play sitting down. Standard chairs, like those at concert venues, are too low. I got this adjustable height orchestra chair, that has 7 different seat heights. It has a back to it too. This one is built like a tank and its lasted me at least 10 years so far, trundling it to gigs and concerts. I love it so much, when I forgot it at a show in Va, by guitar player (from Md ) drive back down to retrieve it. I would recommend it, but the company who made it went out of business. Most orchestra charis are too flimsy for me. THis one doubles as a camp fire chair, lowest setting is like 12" off the ground. Just wish it was padded.

Drummer's throne.

I did try a wood guitar stool and found it lacking in that it only had one height where I can place my foot. Very uncomfortable.

I am considering that.  I imagine the  round seat would be best since the fitted seat would limit my position.

I use a drum throne, with a nice padded tractor type if seat and a small back rest. I'm  up and down.

My uncle had a custom Eames padded chair he bought in the 50s, that was ergo. I had it for a while, but I lost it in a move. Uncle used to sit on that Eames and play his L5 for hours.

Does the tractor seat limit leg position vs a round throne?   do you us a back support?

No, it works out pretty well. It might not be an exaggerated tractor chair more like a gigantic padded bicycle seat but it's very comfortable and the back  support  comes up to the lower lumbar.

It's a standard drum throne of that design.

Beautiful chair!  Thanks for sharing.

Dogfeathers - Posted - 03/21/2023:  14:57:45

For the most part these three chairs were cast offs that I rescued from the land fill. Two on the left were ex office chairs that are height adjustable with a foot rest. I made the wooden tractor seat out of some wood scraps. The one on the right is very adjustable, lives outside all year and was free for the taking.

In the past I used my wife's grandmother's old sewing chair for playing.  I have since had to upgrade to an old dining room chair.

I'm ok lol.  There was an old flea market guitar behind me that didn't fare so well, but nothing that keeps me awake at night.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Right now I decided to use a dining room chair and so far it is comfortable.

Poster wants to use the chair for resonator guitar too.   This is going to lie flat on the lap.  So when sitting the upper legs should be  parallel to the floor.

How does this need affect the recommended chairs?

KYdawn - Posted - 08/13/2023:  15:37:30

I'm a newer player, but started out using the edge of my bed, then weeks later changed to a seat that came with a keyboard which after about 40 minutes isn't comfortable because it's too soft. Now I use a wooden chair the back broke off of, but after about 40 minutes it's too hard.  Planning to buy a cushion for it and ask hubby to cut a couple inches off the legs :)
