Just heard about this Sunday morning, Feb 19th.

My sister, who lives near there says:

"If I felt the need for another banjo, I'd buy a ticket."

Pigsah, lets keep it about the banjo.

Pisgah is keeping it about the kids, about the future of the music, and about honoring a man whose contribution went unnoticed for generations.  That banjo is an incredible gift to that cause, and it will raise a lot of money to hopefully inspire more musicians.   It would be nice for a guitar maker to follow suit, etc.   But this is a great cause.

I bought two tickets for the raffle last yeear and three this year. I don't need another banjo, but I like to support a good cause.

Hey, I'll cover the cost of your ticket if you win so it won't clutter up your house :-)  It's a great looking banjo.  If I win, I might set aside the Schultz plate to keep it nice.  But I have never won one of these things.

They are keeping it about the banjo. Instruments have history. Sometimes that history is uncomfortable. A group of people claiming an instrument as part of their cultural history doesn't mean they're going to take it away from other people who share a different but totally valid cultural history with the same instrument. How is encouraging young people, who have a direct cultural link to the banjo to play the banjo not keeping it about the banjo? Makes my head spin

From Pisgah website: “On plantations is where their white owners discovered the banjo and throughout time it became appropriated into white culture….”

Merriam-Webster: “appropriate: to take or make use of without authority or right”

This is pure leftest BS. America is a melting pot where we absorb traditions from other cultures. The banjo wasn't “taken” from anyone.

The politics are best left to another venue. Lets keep it all banjo at the BH.

Facts are facts whether you like them or not. African people were "taken" from Africa and forced to work on plantations in America. The banjo, an African instrument, played by African slaves, was then indeed appropriated by folks of European descent. What happens after that could certainly be considered a melding of cultures, but to deny that appropriation happened in the case of the banjo is just plain silly. So when you're saying "Pisgah, keep it about the banjo" it really sounds like you mean "Pisgah, let me continue to ignore the very real history of the banjo as an instrument invented by enslaved people and then appropriated by my anscestors"

Thought about it. Then read the rest, I'll pass.

Do you think we also approprated the guitar from the Spain?

Was the Dobro approprated from the Hawiians?

Did Loar get permission to update the design on the Italian 'tater bug?

Sounds like saying is that you have something in your history to feel guilty about.  I do not.

I have hidden several posts. If you 2 are going to argue, please take it off the Hangout.

If Pisgah wanted to celebrate Arnold Schultz, I would applaud them. He deserves to be remembered. They instead decided to make it political by inserting inflammatory language.

Gee wizzz!

I never intended to start a thread about how wrong it was for people who are not of African ancestry to enjoy the banjo!!

As to whether or not Pigsah's language was "inflammatory", let us consider that someone much wiser than I once said:

"It is not what OCCURS, but how we CHOOSE to FEEL about it, that determines our happiness."
