Hi out there everyone in banjoland - question: I was wondering, and have done a bit of research on this myself but am unable to come up with what I want. Does anyone know of a supplier for a reproduction acorn nut which is exactly or nearly exactly in appearance as the nut that came on the upper lag screw (that lag screw nearest the head) on prewar gibson banjos, like came on the style 00,
1, 2, 10 or 11? I am aware that the bowtie era nut, to my recollection anyway, will work, but the looks is totally wrong. Some have suggested Fastenal, Grainger, etc., and other hardware suppliers, but I have searched those websites and they have nothing similar that I can find. The alternative of course is to buy some originals from someone who has a few lying around from prewar conversions; when someone adds an upper cood rod of course they no longer need the nut. (and I would be happy to do that if someone offers me one or several.) Thanks in advance for any replies or help!!

Post a picture or 3 of the exact nut you are looking for. Though occasionally a 00 banjo will come through the shop, I don't remember the exact details of that nut, or even the size socket needed to loosen so I can put it on my workbench, then knock it on the floor only to watch it rattle down the floor heating vent.

Below is a link to the McMaster-Carr web page for acorn nuts.

Also, if you already have one of the nuts, and you're looking to obtain more, there is a Google photo search feature that might help you.  You point your cell phone camera at an object, and tap on the appropriate screen icon, and Google will search for the same or similar item on the Internet.

The upper acorn nut Gibson used on their banjo's is the same nut they have used for the last 100 years on their truss rods. They still use them and they should be readily available from any Gibson dealer as well as on line.
