Ive been wondering why Ralph was not on the Will the Circle be Unbroken album by NGDB. I know about Monroe but just curious if Ralph was even asked.

I've always wondered the same, especially since Ricky Skaggs was on the album too.
I bet Bill wished he had said 'yes'! haha

Skaggs was not on the original project.
Ralph was not well known outside of hard core bluegrass circles in 1972 when the original project was released.

Ricky wasn’t on the first Circle album, Antoine. Roy Acuff, Earl, Jimmy Martin, Mother Maybelle, Merle Travis, Vassar, Norman Blake, Bashful Brother Oswald, & others (going by memory here). The NGDB had recorded "Clinch Mountain Backstep" on ther Uncle Charlie album, so I'm not sure if John McEuen ever asked Ralph.

an abstract--- I love John Mcuen's version of Clinch Mt,Backstep on Nitty Gritty's uncle charley album--I like that album better than the circle stuff -in some ways

The first Circle album was very much a "Nashville" project. Ralph didn't move in those circles back then.

Shoot, you guys are right.... my memory's failing me lol

I recalled whatever this project was... Vol. 2? Johnny Cash, Skaggs and others?
Maybe there was only room for 1 archtop Mastertone? And McEuen had dibs cause NGDB is/was his outfit?
lol just thinking out loud.

I always like McEuen's take on Jim & Jesse's "She left me standing on the mountain", also.

Thats probably the best explanation. I dont think ralph was even an opry member back then
