Hi, we recently purchased a banjo from a music store, and they told us who the previous owner was and we found him here on the hangout.
Before we bought the banjo, we had more questions than the music store owner could answer, so we contacted the previous banjo owner here.
Within minutes he responded to us, and then invited us to call him on his cell phone, and my husband said this person took the time out from his camping at a bluegrass festival and answered all of our questions, and was very kind to help us and we ended up buying the banjo from the music store because the person here on the hangout was so nice to us.
I wish there was a way to rate the person here and we would give him 5 stars, because even though he no longer owned the banjo, he did help us in a big way by giving us a history on the banjo and he took the time to help us make the purchase. Without him I don't think we would have bought the instrument.
So, when I looked to rate the person here, it wouldn't let me do it, unless I was a buyer/seller/trader, and we thought this man deserved recognition for being so helpful to us and for his kindness from one banjo player to another.
I’m not a moderator, so I can’t answer your question.
I do think rating people without a sale could potentially be harmful. While I like to believe most people are truly good people, I have unfortunately discovered the few spiteful bad apples are occasionally emboldened by the anonymity the internet provides, and could use this as an opportunity to extract revenge on another member for a perceived slight.
In this case, perhaps starting a thread and calling out the member for the additional help that they provided would work? I know when I consider buying a banjo, I do a search for the member - mostly to see if they posted anything about the instrument in the past, but a thread about if they were a good seller, would be informative.
Ratings are only for buy/sell from members on the Hangout. I don't see that guideline changing any time soon.
However, if you wish to praise this person for being so nice, you could start a thread on him and let people know how much you appreciated the help and information which ended up in your buying the banjo.
I would, however, ask that person if he had any objection to using their name, as some people would prefer to remain anonymous and not have their name on the internet.
I doubt members would want the site to become subject to people playing games with rating each other, which would very likely happen if there was a rating system for members. It would be a major can of worms and an ongoing headache for Eric and the mods. I don’t know how many if us would continue as moderators if we had to deal with such a system. Any number of us could come up with a set of ratings, but half or more of them would be unpostable on this family-friendly site.
