Living outside "5 string banjo paradise" USA , I wached many "compare banjo's" at YT video app.
In W-Europe, trad. oldtime 5 string banjo music is not very known/ common at all . So no "high standard" instruments availabel to compare. I myself own 2 banjo's: one is a 100yr old nylongut strings/goatskin head British made and the other a Gretsch 5491 DixieDeLuxe, with a whyte laydie t.r. , pre- 2014 ( happy with boths)
Long story short: I dare to claim that the sound of an open back 5 string banjo is made only 30% by the instrument, 5 % setup, 45 % player 20 % recording device, including the engeneer's skills. If not, Lukas Pool's Ozark banjo's should be prized $ 18.000 a piece as minimum. Go ahead and shoot me ... Gerard_60

I think your percentages may be a bit controversial. I think the instrument and the setup is much more important. The recording device is the sound of the recording devices and the recording location caturing an impression of the the sound of the banjo. We don't listen to our banjos through recording devices most of the time. My Gretsch Dixie Deluxe sounds like it does due to the the excellent maple rim and neck, whyte laydie tone ring, renaissance head, heavier bridge, no knot tailpiece, material wound around the strings between tailpiece and bridge and the way I play, which is probably the weak link but at least that a common factor and how I hold the banjo. the instrument and setup are more important than you suggest.
