Listening to The Goins Brothers song "Old Shanghi" I realised that it sounds awfully similar to Ralph Stanley's "Let's Go To The Fair" from his "Hills Of Home" LP.

Can anybody shed any light on this?

In the liner notes to the Goins Brothers debut LP "Bluegrass Hits Old And New" it mentions that Melvin left Ralph on 18th May 1969. The album includes two songs which were in Ralph's repertoire around the time as vocal spots for Melvin ("Ole Slewfoot" & the Lonesome Pine Fiddlers "You're No Good"). Are there any live shows that include "Lets Go..." whilst Melvin was still with Ralph? The Goins debut LP and the 45 on REM were both released in July 1969 & Ralph recorded "Let's Go..." the same month.

It's also reported in the liner notes to the 3-CD "Poor Rambler" set that "Let's Go..." was featured in an early Stanley Brothers 'Farm & Fun Time' radio show.

Saw the Goins brothers several times in the early 70's at Watermellon Park in Berryville Va .
They were a very traditional & talented brother duo , close to old timey , but like the Stanleys , solid early BG .
---- thanks Ivor for the post !

That’s interesting! First time hearing “Old Shanghai” for me… it’s obvious the melody and feel is almost identical… but I’ve never heard it before. Ivor, I am almost positive I’ve heard a few early takes of “Let’s Go To The Fair” live but I can’t remember what year the recordings was or who the personnel on it was…. I'm pretty sure I've heard several live versions of Roy Lee singing it and I'm pretty positive I've heard a live tape of Carter and Ralph doing it somewhere. Also seems like I've heard a live set with Larry Sparks and Ralph doing it too. I will research it later and if I can find the recording or any info I will post it!
