I'm watching a 2013 Marty Stuart Show featuring Tommy who opens with his nutso Guitar Boogey and does a couple more later.
Amazing from one end of the guitar neck to the other! One of my favorite Marty Shows.

He is amazing. We saw him live a few years ago. What a great show.

Agree, great show. I saved it and watched it over and over.

A fine player, of course. But I cannot stand his over-the-top-everyone-look-at-me facial expressions and body language.

Matt, if I could play like that my face would split from the big grin. Hell, my banjo face is bad enough!

I never judge anyone's music by their face. They can do whatever they like to sound the way they do.
Do you have any problems with how Billy Strings looks,Matt?
All I see when I watch Tommy play is someone who's happy to be there and he spends a lot of time looking at where his left fingers are headed.

Tommy’s a great player. I’ve never been crazy about stage histrionics with any performer… I guess it must work cuz most keep doing it. (just the facts , ma’am. & give me poker-faced Earl any day)

I’m not suggesting I’m being rational or fair. I just find the histrionics to be a distraction.
So, any fine regular OT sessions near you? Several times a year, including next week, I visit family in Boothbay Harbor.

We have every Sunday from 1:30 to 4 at the Steam Power and Sail Museum in Rockland. Not totally OT,but a very nice acoustic mix of 12-20 musicians.Good fiddle players and a well-rounded "playlist".
All are very respectful of the "next in line" and will either accompany or sit out if not familiar with the choice.
I saw the Earls of Leicester at the Boothbay Opera House last summer.Fine old venue.I prefer the balcony about halfway toward the stage.I think Jerry is bringing his own band there this year.I'm getting tix for that.

I like to watch old footage of Jerry Reed burning up an acoustic fretboard. Talk about a triple threat--fingerstyle guitar monster, singer/songwriter, hilarious character actor. Whew.

TE's good enough to act however he wants.
First time we saw or heard of him he was passing through as a performer dropped out of the Ohio State Fair and he stepped in. A small stage on the main drag vs the performance center where he really belonged.
My luthier at the time said you got to go see this guy. We caught every show and seen him many times since. Had great tickets to see him and Jerry Douglas but Covid nixed it.

I like to see any performer establish a rapport w/ thier audience w/o
hokey salesmanship especially if they are talented whereby talent rules .
steve davis - Posted - 06/17/2022: 08:32:39
Salesmanship is only "hokey" if it has nothing to sell.
I suppose Tommy's finances have nothing to do with hokeyness.

Great link,Arnie.Once I finished with that I chose "My Life as a One Man Band" and it was a fine on-stage of his roots and technique(s).
I especially enjoy reading the entries below the film saying what a generous and truly caring person he is.

I’m definitely a fan of his.
You ever see him play “Over the Rainbow “ ?
The string of harmonic notes he plays are a thing of beauty.

I’ve been fortunate to see Tommy live and besides his amazing musicianship he really engages the audience. As a solo act, that is pretty impressive. He is an entertainer in every sense. The only other person I’ve seen who I’d put on a par with Tommy as a live solo act was John Hartford. Got to see him many times live, sometimes in small venues, and he never disappointed.

Vaughn Meader got on the phone one day in 1988 and asked John Hartford to come to The Speakeasy in Hallowell Maine and play an evening.
Two days later John and an 18 year-old Jaimie came to Hallowell and played 2 sets at the Speakeasy and they sat at our table between and after sets.
