Does anyone remember someone named M.J. De Young? I got this banjo at an auction in michigan, i thought it was an eagle stew mac kit banjo, maybe it is, but its much higher quality than other kit banjos ive seen. And the inlays are all hand done, rim, resonator and neck are much higher quality than what ive seen from stew mac. Can anyone help me id this? Is it a kit banjo or something else?

It probably is a Stew-Mac kit banjo. or at least all Stew-Mac parts. It looks like it was assembled by a competent craftsman, though when ever I see rhinestones on a modern instrument I always question their aesthetic taste.

thanks, thats where im leaning. The rhinestones are gaudy for sure. do you know of any resources on old stew mac parts? Ive only seen the multiply rims and never a nohole tone ring, ive got this setup with a new bridge and its a hoss for sure, not sure if i could ever play it in public though ;-)

Of course I should have kept my 50 years of Stew-Mac catalogs. All but a few are long gone. Definitely a good resource now.

Hello,

The banjo is distinct enough that gaudy bling doesn’t detract from its naturally good sound. The previous owner obviously liked the bling. His/her progeny didn’t.

What happens on stage during performance?
See if the stones light up with spotlights on them.
I think that's what they are for.

costume jewelery has some interesting forms.

Once a customer sent me a "piece" to inlay in their headstock.

You're exactly right, its certainly for on stage bling. Thats why I was hoping someone on her might recognize the builder, I believe hes probably the guy who played it as well.
