Local boys last winter. One got his sled bogged and night was falling. They all totally equipped. The night in the tree hole shows you how big they are ( see the guy at the back?) Dug in sideways to be comfortable. Gives you an idea of out March snow depth up top.

Fantastic! I've just shared this with my team mates in our rescue team. I must admit though, I wouldn't have liked to have had one of the turban/jacket sleeve knots go whilst I was being pulled up.

The rescue helicopters we work with (Sikorsky S-92) have such a powerful downwash that sometimes they can't winch for the risk of sending Homer back down the cliff for a third time.

Jonty, I've ridden in helicopters a few times, but my "expertise" is a good fit with the ^^ cartoon. Allay my ignorance..... wouldn't a longer cable mitigate the downwash?

SImple uni to uni knot wouldnt let go as the harder you pull the tighter it gets. Having seams give way would scare me lol

The winch cables are pretty long Owen, but the downwash is brutal. I'd imagine the cable would have to be so long to be impractical before the down wash was cancelled out. I'm no expert but in rough conditions I think the shorter the winch, the more accurate they can be lowering to the casualty site.

Some folks just go hiking to "experience the great outdoors", like it was the biggest accomplishment of their lives, and that they were completely knowledgeable. Then, comes something like a snake, bear, turkey, whatever, and some would just freak out and trip over a rock.

Being prepared and naturally-educated is important when it comes to hiking or just about anything outdoors.
