When did Gibson change from three lug to four lug resonators?

That is a question that depends upon the model of the banjo.

It happened when one of the three "lugs" got his brother to quit pro wrestling and come work for Gibson, instead.

They seem to have always had 4 lugs on higher end banjos and 3 on the lower end 00 and 100s.

depending on year, model, and other things, such as "are we running low on lugs?" The style 1's are famous for using either 3 or 4 lugs over the years. Nearly all 00's use 3, nearly all 2's, 3's, 4's, and above use 4. For several years early on, either 3 or 4 are common on a few models. The style 10 and 11 nearly always use 3.
