I’ve generally like my ABS system, but I don’t think their stomp box / preamp does much in increasing the gain for solos. Does anyone have a recommendation for alternatives that might a bit more effective?

In my electric guitar rig, my volume pedal is the most used effect. I set it to about 80% most of the time, then rock it forward when I need that extra volume, or back for quieter moments. Some use it for violin-like swells, but I don't get that fancy. It is basically a foot operated volume knob. Simple but amazingly useful. I think it would be a good solution for your situation. The Ernie Ball Junior model is an industry standard, and is passive to boot.

Edit- I'm not 100% sure if the impedance on the ABS will line up- the ernie ball is designed for passive electric circuits. That being said, I have effectively used it with K&K pickups, an active electric bass, and even a Taylor Expression System, but never that particular pickup.
