I stumbled onto a web site that's dedicated to basic music theory.  I find it to be well organized and well written and I thought some of you might also find it to be of value.  Below is the web site link.

Hello Music Theory

It's very classical oriented, the kind of thing a college would put you thru because they've got four years of time to fill so here comes the minute details. Strip 90% of that and you have the kind of music on this site.

Thanks, Wayne. I could certainly use a little better understanding of theory.

This is like a month's worth of material that you would cover as a freshman. If you think these are minute details, then I have some bad news for you.

Do you have any recommendations for a banjoist's music theory course or guide?

Much of the music most people want to play is songs they hear. So ear-training is needed because the sheet music is not available. I would recommend my post on this from 5 years ago and to keep asking questions, BTW most people don't know what to askwink

I have always felt that theory books aren't particulaly useful unless they are accompanied by ear training. There isn't much sense in knowing how a third is notated or whether it's a major or a minor third without also knowing what that third sounds like.

I agree on the ear training. Also, theory has it’s own language and until you understand the terms they use you’re lost.
