Without getting too technical or expensive, I need some idea of what you guys use to record/video your banjo. I’m thinking my laptop will work but mainly I need ideas on a usb mic. I see cheap ones on Amazon but there’s a lot of cheap stuff on Amazon but I don’t want to spend several hundred either! Just occasional use! Thanks

For video I use an old iPhone 5s with a Zoom iQ5 microphone. When I record just audio I use Audacity on my laptop computer with a Sampson Go Mic. I've had the phone and microphones for years and they work fine for me.

Randy, I got the Shure MV88 microphone and I use it with my iPad. The reviews are good. I am not an audiophile at all but it is definitely a much better mike than the built-in and there's free software for it that can be used to record both audio and video. The  software's easy to use, and I like the sound of the recordings. Not sure which OS or devices you are using though.

Yes, the iPad mics are very good — but what makes them so good for speech gets in the way of music.

I have the same Shure mic and the Zoom iQ5. Both are good but you can monitor off the iQ5 (or 7 that replaced it in the Zoom lineup) as these have a headphone jack. With the MV88, there's no way to monitor while recording on an iPhone 7 or any later device without a headphone jack.

Audio Technica AT2020 USB mic direct into my laptop is my long-time usual way to record an MP3. Trial and error shows the best position for my set up is about 12" - 18" directly in front of the head.

But an iPhone placed on the chair next to my right thigh now does such a good job I'd challenge anyone to hear a significant drop in quality
