This part of the BHO forums looked like the most likely place to put a request like this since there isn't a "looking for jams" topic heading; if there's a more likely place to ask, please let me know. ;)

I recently moved to the Old City (St. Augustine FL) and am in search of other old timey folk to make music with here. I know there have to be folk playing old-timey music in the "Oldest City" (or so I hope), but I haven't located any.)

Even finding a fiddler to sit with would be great. Anyone here (BHO) know of any old timey players here (St Augustine)?

About 15 years ago I was in St Augustine. A friend told me there was an OT jam at some park on Sat morning. It was truly the oddest jam I've ever been in. At the head of a walking trail, there were some musicians -likely the host musicians- calling the tunes. There were jammers clustered about. I was able to find a spot in line maybe 50-60 feet down the trail. I'm am unconvinced that anyone beyond the first ring was playing the same tune. Maybe they've tightened things up.

In the past,I have used the local Craigslist to look for and find an old time fiddler to play with. Worth a shot.

Thanks for the info folks! Craig's List is a good idea- I'll give it a shot.

This may or may not have jams in your area, but I've used it a lot when I travel.

Gonna guess that much of the population of St. Augustine is in shelter at home mode.  After the virus has passed & the local music stores are open again.  Make a nice colorful poster inviting oldtime musicians to jam with you--put up a photo of yourself with your banjo & have a smiling wife and or kids in the photo with you.

Invite other old time musicians to an old-time jam at your home--its good if you put up a pix of a nice front porch--list an exact day & time (make it 2 hours) and say there will be snacks and free beer & drinks too.  Put your full name & cell number on those little tabs at the bottom so folks can call in advance to get directions and let them know where there is parking.

Good luck :)  I think there are some old-time musicians in St. Augustine--but it will probably take incentives to get them out :)

Best wishes,

Mary Z

Thanks Mary. I'm not sure if there are any "real" music stores in SA though- haven't had a chance to look around yet.
