Lately I've been looking for an upgrade and I've been going back and forth between a Deering Sierra and an RK-75. I am a Scruggs-style player. However, a couple of weeks ago I ran into a 1980s Wildwood Troubador in a local shop for a decent price. But I don't know much about the Troubadors.

It had a resonator which I thought was a bit strange - is that common? Aren't Troubadors primarily for clawhammer?

How do I know for sure it is a Troubador -- I couldn't see any markings other than "Wildwood".

I own a Wildwood Troubador open-back. It sounds great played Scruggs style and I could see the appeal as a bluegrass banjo with a resonator.

Tubaphone style tone ring, bound neck with bird-themed inlays and you've got a Troubador. Flathead style tone ring and perhaps it's something else?

Quite a few one-off Wildwood banjos exist so maybe you've run across one.

I play both 3 finger and clawhammer on my tubaphone ring Wildwood troubadour. Does well as BG Banjo and good for CH. I can see it being punchy with a resonator.

Acoustic Vibes in Tempe used to carry Wildwood. Worth a call.

Yeah, I thought it sounded pretty good, although I didn't have my picks with me. And it was pretty heavy.

Of course, I think they are probably closed now, so I won't be back for awhile.

But I am curious - how do you know it is a troubador? I could see no labels anywhere other than the sales tag. I'll try and post a couple photos if I can.

Here are some photos of the Troubador.
