Yesterday's Washington Post Magazine (washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/magazine) had an article about Victor Furtado winning the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass.

I saw something about it on Facebook a few days ago - but then didn't see anything else to confirm it. So am very glad to see that it is true.

He is an amazing musician with an exciting and bright future. Congratulations to Victor...and kudos to Steve Martin!

There's an amazing video of Victore with Noam on youtube. It's a "Wood Songs" concert. Victor is only ll years old there and jaw dropping. youtube.com/watch?v=oYYCgdFU0Go

Thanks for the video link. I now understand how he got so good so young, he was great by 11! I seem to recall Martin saying this might be the last award as there were too many good, young banjo players.

I read some time back that Furtado had been awarded the Steve Martin prize. He comes from a very musical family. This nicely written article makes it clear that Victor needed the cash. I've only seen a few videos of him on youtube which are amazing!
I should try to get hold of his CDs. Sadly, I too understand that the is the last of prizes that Martin will give out.

I understand his reasoning about ending the award but still sad to see it go. It was great publicity for all of us with the general public when he'd award them on the David Letterman show with the player performing, etc.

Good on Victor for his Berklee Conservatory goals! Glad he'll be able to get that education without worrying abut how to pay for it.

Steve told me that if I gave him $50,000 he would gladly give it back to me as a prize! I wonder if he meant that? ;-)

Victor has shared some of what he’s studying via Instagram. Recently it was playing a melody while maintaining chordal rhythm. Another time it was playing in odd timing, like 9/8. He uses some unique rhythm patterns and really takes banjo study to a new level.
