Thank you all for the wealth of info on here. I play guitar and mando and recently added tenor Irish style banjo. I need to amplify for St Patrick’s Day gigs and after much study, I decided to blend the EMG’s with the AKG411 into a Zoom A3. Does anyone hav experience with this setup or advice?
The AKGc411 is not a good option for banjo. After trying it, it feeds back at low volumes and doesn’t pick up the characteristics of the banjo. The sound is low and muffled. It works great on a mandolin, especially when blended with a piezo or other pickup. Not a good banjo solution.
Sound guy,... It really does depend upon your application. For live sound you might be better off with a c214. Multi pattern mics are not so tight of a pattern as a single pattern cardioid mic. Another point to consider is a pre amp. A pre amp can really open up a mic for your application and allow you to back off the thing, and achieve the presentation you desire mixed thru FOH and monitors. You still have to learn to work the rig. A lot depends on the tech in a live situation. Results can be inconsistent, thru the filter of sound guy's assumptions with system set up, FOH and monitor EQ. Your gonna have to practice with it to consistently get the results you desire in a live setting. Don't be carried away with your's, or the assumptions of others.
