I was preparing to migrate files from old computer to another computer, and found a set of pics of our band, Stumpwater,  in 2010, on a real stage in a real auditorium. Unusual for us. All four can play banjo and guitar, three of us can play upright bass-maybe four, two play fiddle...

But only I played the "teufelsgeige", pronounced "tie-fulls-guy-guh".

*The banjo is the "Red Haired Boy" a custom made for me, by Chuck Lee.  (I used to have red hair)

This was primarily a Old Time gig and we chose to wear blue coveralls (mine are Pointer Brand-of course ;-) ) but we also did a set of traditional Cajun and a set of traditional German.

The guitar player is also a BHO member, Lance.

The teufelsgeige is a messy percussion thing, that I believe the Prussians brought back from Turkey in some war and adapted into many forms. I made this one from many parts, including my own hand-painted Irish Boudran with German fraktur painted design.

I played it with a rhythm saw drum stick along with all the while rhythmically banging the floor with the whole thing. From top to bottom, this "Devil's Fiddle" includes:

<A custom hand carved devil's head

<small high hat cymbal set (that clashed as the rod hit the floor)

<swiss bells on the crossbar (with German medalion and ribbons)

<Cowbell

<woodblock

<crash cymbol

<drum/boudran

(((How about some band pics of you all))   Brad

Funny, you mention everyone plays almost every instrument on the stage. But you don't mention the (duh duh dahhhhh!) accordion.

I guess every group has their hidden skeletons.

(any recordings? Looks like a fun group)

Tyler plays button Cajun melodeons and German Steirische harmika.  Ain't no accordians in our band! ;-)

The band has been on break for a few years. Thanks, Brad

I've never heard of the teufelsgeige before, It is now at the top of my list of most annoying instrument to bring to a bluegrass jam. Next to spoons and didgeridoo.

My hat’s off to you, Brad. I don’t know what it’s called but one guy I know brought to a jam one of those instruments you blow into and has a small piano-style keyboard, made of plastic yet....sheesh.  After he took a solo break on it I told him I was ready to puke.....he still mentions it to me in fun, but never brought it again.  Your toyfullguyg sounds much more interesting.

Its now a handsome object d' art in the house, that my wife has managed to stand in a discrete area in our home.  It was a beast to play, due to its weight.  My solos were fun, when I was really feelin it.  I never had the nads to take it to a jam...of any kind.  Brad
