.....even if this came off of Earl's banjo.....is it really worth this asking price ?!?!

I thought it might have an extra zero! I especially love that shipping is $20!

Even on BHO classifieds there are some of what I would consider overly aggressive prices for parts .

Assuming it is authentic (the seller knew the right names to list), what would one be worth?

csacwp - Posted - 11/30/2019:  06:30:11

If it is a genuine 5-string Granada hoop then there are folks who will pay that much for it. I'd be sure to ask for provenance before buying...

What next?: The shoes he was wearing the day he died?

Aren't those brass underneath (vs. pot metal)? Seems like that would lower the value considerably?

Along the same lines, here is a mislabeled "Gibson" "Prewar" 1928 "Granada." About the only thing from 1928 is the $300 shoe bracket rim. Looking at the description suggests the whole Ad might be a scam. Yikes!!!!

Well, he does disclose that the neck, hardware, and resonator are not original.  Rim is a TB-1 with aftermarket ring, correct?  Wow.  Absolutely nothing 1928 Granada about it.

Has anyone ever found the sharpened finger picks Earl is wearing on the cover of Foggy Mountain Banjo album? What would you pay for them?

The Old Timer - Posted - 11/30/2019:  07:52:04

I'll stipulate that the offered tension hoop is completely real. A 5 string Granada tension hoop. At $8500.

My QUESTION is, where's the REST of the banjo?????????? Maybe it's being parted out?

Yes, it would be brass. Some of the '30s Granadas actually had brass E2 hoops. I've been told that the Mack Crowe also has a brass hoop. So I don't think it would lower the value.

Funny you mention that Dave , early on , I thought that's how picks should look & fashioned mine as such !

With this one could build a "original" pre-war Granada out of it.

I was given these 2 banjos yesterday. I am a guitarist with no banjo experience. I would like to get these to someone who will play them. Obviously i'd like to sell them but I have no idea what they are worth ( if anything). Any help in identifying these and finding a place to sell them would be greatly appreciated.

The Old Timer - Posted - 11/30/2019:  10:06:46

James, you should start a fresh topic in Collectors Corner or Swap Shop with info and photos about your banjos.  With your photos post a Classified ad here.   The fee to BHO for a successful sale is miniscule.  You don't need to pay until you sell.

First question any reader is going to ask is are they 4 string or 5 string banjos.

Good luck!

I have a friend who purchased a 1928 TB-Granada and converted it with a 5-string neck. He took the tenor tension hoop and filed down the "ears" on either side of the neck. He used gold spray paint to cover the filing marks. I swear you could not tell it wasn't original! Now maybe with a magnifying glass you could see the modification but the average person would never notice it. As always, BUYER BEWARE!
