Actually saw this instrument at Arthur’s Music in Indianapolis earlier this year. Pics don’t do it justice; it’s quite massive.

I've heard a few of these at jams and didn't care for the sound. I like a full, deep bass tone. The bass banjo was too trebly, as you might expect.

Somewhat smaller (20” diameter),but very cool is Gryphon’s one-off. And you can follow the pictures and make your own.

Fairbanks made at least one Whyte Laydie upright bass banjo. It was for sale through Bernunzio a few years ago.

I think Bela Fleck and Abigail Washburn own that Whyte Laydie banjo bass.

Ira Gitlin , do you think Bela could play Seven By Seven on that thing?

When I interviewed them for Banjo Newsletter two years ago, he said, "It’s huge even for a bass. Every bass player is like ‘Oh, come on, I can’t play this thing!’”

Back when I could still play, piece of cake.  Any violone player can. A full sized violone is a lot larger than a bass fiddle with 6 strings, gut frets, tuned an octave and a half below a lute and played with a bow. The neck is huge—wider and thicker than my 5-string symphony bass. It gets hard from there.

Not as problematic as this...
