Arno, the monster.

Arno is actually a very nice guy.

I met him a couple of times in the jazz festival circuit of the 1980s. Both of us up-and-coming banjo lions in our early twenties then. But  Arno's technical skills were already out of this world, at that time.

Hopefully you didn’t misunderstand my description of “monster” as mean. It’s meant as big, badass. He’s a monster player.

Patrick,

I didn't misunderstand you, no. My reply was rather meant as mildly ironic: as if you indeed had said that Arno is a "monster", tabloid-style. Like the British gutter press usually does of notorious serial killers, for instance. Or of politicians who do not immediately jump on their bandwagon.

But once again, you got it absolutely nailed that Arno is 'banjoistically' something completely else. Some techniques developed on his own steam that I haven't been able to replicate to this day.

Something that slightly puzzles me, though: a Arno Hagenaars website does indeed exist, but it seems dead. No contact details given either. I avoid Facebook and Twitter, though. Well - social media generally, because of being intrusive. Maybe they're not. Or not as much as I believe they are. But I'd rather be cautious than sorry.

However, I'd surely like to say hello, for old times' sake. And if Arno is just on Facebook and Twitter, these days, it seems that I must forget about that.

Thanks for sharing Patrick. While I've heard of him a lot, this is my first time watching him. Now you have me searching for more vids. He's the real deal for sure! What I'd give to have the chance to jam with him!

Lance,

There are indeed many more Arno clips on YouTube. Just enter 'Arno Hagenaars', and I'm sure a host will spring up.

To my mind, Arno is a real banjo innovator.

yeah thanks for sharing. never heard of Arno.

I'm going to look for his album synchropation.
It's got a cool "modern" sound, an organ trio with banjo instead of guitar!
I've only hear this track..

There's more: banjo in the style of Herb Alpert, for instance. :-)
