Check out the album “Concord Jazz Guitar Collective” featuring Howard Alden, Frank Vignola, and Jimmy Bruno. Great tunes, monster playing, and two guys who started their musical trajectories on 4-string banjo (Howard and Frank).

From an earlier era, Freddie Green started on 4 string banjo. He did not develop into the outstanding soloists of those folks but his rhythm playing is right on.

Freddie... the human metronome.

Many moons ago, I had the chance to jam with Frank. Once at I think a FIGA show and once in Pittsburgh at a Frank Rossi show. He was playing tenor and I had my plectrum. Little did I know then that he would become one of the great guitar players of all time. I'll have the pleasure of seeing his Dad Mike in Dearborn a week from Thursday. Sure wish he'd bring those 2 along!
