Many of the players on this forum use TablEdit to generate their tabs.  Many others use such generated tabs and use the free file viewer/player called TefView on the Windows PCs, MAC, iPads, or Pocket PCs to view the tabs, to play them back and to thereby learn new pieces of music.

A new version of TefView is soon to hit the streets (before the end of the year) and this is a brand new port to the Android operating system for Android based tablets and phones.  This development can be read about at the TablEdit Yahoo Discussion Group over at: groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Ta.../messages">groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Ta.../messages .

TefView for Android devices is now out of Beta testing (as at 15th November 2014) and is available for FREE from the Google Play Store.

This file player will display tabs from TablEdit files (.tef), from Guitar Pro 3, 4 and 5 and from Power-Tab.  It will also import Tabrite, midi and text tab files.

A pretty good product and one I can see me using a lot - certainly saves carrying around lots of printed tabs.

Enjoy.

Cheers.

Brilliant! This is great news, my poor laptop is gonna get ignored!

I downloaded TefView, but the tablet will not download TabEdit files as they, "might be harmful to the device".

I cannot find any option to circumvent that.

Sigh.....................

Charlie,

How are you downloading the tab (.tef) files ??   I have all my tabs on DropBox and can open them from there with the Android version of TefView with ease.  I have also loaded them all onto Google Drive and can load them from their just as easily.

Perhaps I can help you in some way ??

Dear All,

A couple of days ago I emailed Matthieu Lemeschelle (the author of TablEdit and TefView) and asked him to consider including the ability to import .bjo files from TabRite into the new version of TefView on Android devices.   He has just mailed to say that he has loaded a new test .apk file to the TablEdit Forum files section on Yahoo and has indicated that one of the things to be tested with this 'new' version is the ability to open .bjo files.  The full version should be uploaded to Google Play Store soon to allow those who have downloaded the FREE app to update their copy and thereby obtain the new features.   Here is hoping it works well and that Matthieu will consider then adding the same facility to all versions of TefView in the near future.

I hope that will help all the Banjo players here and especially those with a collection of TabRite files or those who download such files from the tab library.

Cheers and keep on pluckin'.

Just to let people know - last night my Nexus-10 tablet updated to the new version of Android - version 5.0 (Lollipop).  I took the opportunity to test the new TefView app for Android and it worked perfectly under the new version of Android.  Good news.

Could I please request that if you download TefView for Android from the Google Play Store that you leave a rating and a comment for Matthieu - the author.   By doing so you will help provide him with the encouragement he needs to continue development of this wonderful FREE facility.   -   play.google.com/store/apps/det...id.TEView

Many thanks.

As at the 1st December 2014 Matthieu and Larry are working on new facilities for 'TefView for Android'.  These new facilities will add printing capabilities and the ability to create a PDF file from loaded a tab.  Sounds good to me, especially as 'TefView for Android' is FREE !!!

My android tablet Samsung Note 10.1) will open the tefs but will not play them. Maybe it's not supposed to but at least I can view them.

SteveMcBill - Posted - 12/02/2014:  13:15:55

Bobby,

There was an issue a week or so ago whereby some Tablets would not play the tabs (i.e. make a sound).  Matthieu the TablEdit/Tefview author has released a new version (on 29th November I think) which will or should fix this issue.  It can be downloaded from the Google Play Store - play.google.com/store/apps/det...;hl=en_GB

If after updating your copy to the new version you still cannot play the tabs then I would recommend you posting the problem on teh TablEdit Forum over at:  groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Ta.../messages - as I am certain Matthieu would be interested and want to try and put things right.

Cheers,

Steve

You're welcome Bobby.

TefView for Android version 2.0 is due out on the Google Play Store pretty soon - this is the one with the ability to print to PDF - I currently have a Beta test version.

Cheers.

SteveMcBill - Posted - 12/11/2014:  02:48:00

TefView for Android will now display AND play files from TablEdit, Guitar-Pro 3, Guitar-Pro 4, Guitar-Pro 5, Bucket O'Tab, Power-Tab, and TabRite.  It will also open ABC, MusicXML, Midi, and Text (ASCII) files.  So now you can see your whole collection of tabs from different software and can listen to them on playback from anywhere where you have your tablet and/or Android phone.  The next version (ver. 2.0) to be released soon will allow you to print the tabs to PDF.

TefView is also available for iOS (iPads and iPhones), Windows, MACs, Linux, and Power PCs - all versions are FREE.

See here:  tabledit.com/tefview/download.shtml

Cheers and enjoy.

Hi,

We've just released TEFview for Android 2.0. As Steve said, this major upgrade allows you to preview the file as it will be printed (you can even play it and TEFview will turn the pages for you) and to export it as a standard PDF file.

Having no luck installing it on my kindle HD, I'm still getting "Cannot Open File" after it seems it has downloaded it....any help would be appreciated.

SteveMcBill - Posted - 12/16/2014:  08:13:06

Could I ask you to post your problem/query over on the TablEdit Forum at:

groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Ta.../messages

please Owen ??

It seems the Kindle Fire is an Android-based tablet which uses a fork of Android called Fire OS 1.   Is it a Kindle Fire that you have Owen ??

Taken from a review:  "Kindle Fire HD (2013) review: Fire OS 3.0. It might look similar, but Amazon has made big strides forward with the new version of Fire OS, which is based on Android Jelly Bean.  This is a tablet running a heavily customised version of Android with restricted access to the Google Play App store.".

Cheers,

Steve

Just a thought Owen - where did you download the TefView .apk file from ??  I ask as Kindle will not allow access to teh Google Play Store.  If you are loading it from an SD card or a phone etc. then it is called sideloading and I just found this:

"When referring to Android apps, "sideloading" typically means installing an application package in APK format onto an Android device. Such packages are usually downloaded from websites other than Google Play. Sideloading of apps is only possible if the user has allowed "Unknown Sources" in their Security Settings."

Hope that helps.

Wow, what a great app!

Congratulations to the developer Matthieu. Now I can show others how to play a tune at sessions using my mobile phone. I also encourage others to give the app a high rating at the Google Play store and add an appreciative comment.

Has anyone found a good sound/instrument for playback on Android? The "banjo" sounds awful.

I am referring to the TefView for android.

Thanks.

SteveMcBill - Posted - 01/05/2015:  03:53:21

Sadly, the author of TefView has no impact on the sounds in the Android version - it depends upon the synthesiser in your Android device.  Must admit I do not know whether all Android devices use the same midi sounds or not.  The banjo on my Google Nexus-10 tablet also sounds roughish but I am quite happy with the guitar sound (not a real guitar of course but a midi sounds representation).  I suppose it depends upon what you want the sound for in your use of the app.  If all you want is to be able to hear how the tune goes and to be able to play along with it then I think the sound (even of the banjo) is OK but if you are after a performance element to the played back tunes then I doubt that at this time in the technology that will be possible.  Perhaps I am wrong and somebody else can point me in the correct direction ??

In the PC version of TefView (and TablEdit) it is possible to assign SoundFonts and have them used during the playback - some of the FREE soundfonts available can give very good play-back sounds indeed.  I have no idea whether this is a possibility under Android or iOS versions.

Cheers.

Any idea if this is ported for the blackberry playbook?

SteveMcBill - Posted - 02/09/2015:  02:01:41

Alec,

As far as I can see the Blackberry Playbook uses a proprietary operating system (OS) and not one of the major operating systems (Android or iOS).  TefView has been ported to both Android and to Apple's iOS but not I think to Blackberry OS - sorry.  I also think it unlikely that the author will produce a Blackberry Playbook version as Blackberry are about to discontinue support for its operating system - see here:  crackberry.com/blackberry-play...nds-april

I hope that helps - sorry to be the bringer of bad news.

Ok banjo folks maybe you can help. I use tabledit on Windows pc just fine.

Have Android Kindle fire HDX 8.9...and is android. Tabledit will not work on my Kindle as I know (ive tried)..I cant download Tefview on to Kindle Fire HDX....says not compatible with this Android. So my questions to you all

1)  has anyone figured out how to get Tefview to work on Kindle Fire HDX?. Not just Android devices

2) Or other suggestions for similar software...lots of Android stuff out there...so far found none contemptible.

PS Tefvview also works fine on Samsung  phone but just to small.

SteveMcBill - Posted - 03/06/2015:  12:17:11

TwoDogs,

I posted the below to help Owen get TefView for Android running on his Kindle Fire and it worked for him - here is hoping you can do the same:

"Just a thought Owen - where did you download the TefView .apk file from ??  I ask as Kindle will not allow access to teh Google Play Store.  If you are loading it from an SD card or a phone etc. then it is called sideloading and I just found this:

"When referring to Android apps, "sideloading" typically means installing an application package in APK format onto an Android device. Such packages are usually downloaded from websites other than Google Play. Sideloading of apps is only possible if the user has allowed "Unknown Sources" in their Security Settings."

Hope that helps."

So, TwoDogs, if you download the Tefview for Android .apk file from the TablEdit Forum pages (Files section) you should be able to do something similar - see over at:  groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Ta.../Android/

Cheers,

Steve
