The George Washington University Department of Music Presents

Yeskel Memorial Concert Series

Stephen Wade, The Beautiful Music All Around Us

October 23, 2013 ~ 7:30 PM

EVENT:            As part of the Yeskel Memorial Concert Series, 2013 Grammy nominee, writer, and scholar Stephen Wade, accompanied by veteran multi-instrumentalist Zan McLeod, will present a concert performance of The Beautiful Music All Around Us; a combination of live music, projected images, and spoken narrative that traces Wade’s journey into musical traditions across the American South. Wade’s remarkable research that culminated recently in his award winning book, The Beautiful Music All Around Us, rediscovers the largely unknown players and singers whose performances of traditional songs were captured on early Library of Congress field recordings. His stories of folk tunes, their creators, and the communities from which they spring, speak to the interconnectedness of American lives.

Wade has devoted his long career to the study of American folklife, uniting scholarship and the creative arts. A guitarist and banjoist since childhood, his presentations combine virtuoso musicianship with scholarly substance and storytelling. His book, The Beautiful Music All Around Us: Field Recordings and the American Experience (University of Illinois Press), has been described in the Wall Street Journal as “a masterpiece of humane scholarship — but one that reads like a detective story.”

WHERE:           Jack Morton Auditorium – The George Washington University Campus

805 21st Street, NW

Washington, DC 20052

BACKGROUND:

The Yeskel Memorial Concerts is a concert series bringing national and international artists to the George Washington University campus.  Stanely Yeskel Visiting Artists interact with students through master classes, class visits, and guest lectures. Through concert performances and master classes, these Visiting Artists give students insight into the artistry of performance; through visits to classes discussing interpretation and the professional life of the musician, they engage with the scholarly side of our students’ education.

This program is generously supported by Peter Yeskel, a CCAS alumnus and an emeritus member of the Dean’s National Council for Arts and Sciences. Inspired by his father’s love for music, Mr. Yeskel worked with the university’s development office to make a gift of music that honored his father, Stanley Yeskel, who passed away in 2002.  Previous performances in the series include Ieva Jokubaviciute, piano; Miranda Cuckson, violin; and Vijay Iyer, jazz piano.

The Beautiful Music All Around Us: Field Recordings and the American Experience is a wonderful book, one that I will keep going back to over and over again.

I heard Mr. Wade speak--and play--at Northwestern earlier this year. His slides and stories were fascinating and, quite frankly, I could have listened to him share for hours longer than the scheduled presentation.

If his Texas and Washington, D. C. events are anything like the one in Illinois, they are not to be missed.

I saw Stephen in the late 80s at the Boiler Room in Washington DC...Banjo Dancing (I think). Was SO impressed with his showmanship.

Thanks for the heads up on the DC show. I'll be in town for the Ralph Stanley concert and would very much like to see Stephen Wade again.  I went to his Hobart Smith/Fleming Brown show at the Birchmere several years ago - he is a master at combining wonderful music, historical information, and personal anecdotes into a seamless, entertaining and informative whole.  And I really enjoyed his "Beautiful Music" book - it would be great to see it come to life onstage.

I saw it in Chicago in April, it is ..... Really can't think of the right word. But the closest analogy would be: you see a tree, one trunk. Stephen comes, pulls up the tree by the roots, and describes in detail each root and it's significance in relation to the tree. And he does this for every root, not just the major ones. He takes the songs we know, and takes them back in time, pointing out who influenced the song at what points in history. I guess the right word would be captivating. A complete and total look at the history of some of our most important songs, some of which we don't know yet. His book...detailed, interesting, and will give you a sense of the history of a song, and will wet your appetite so that after a  few chapters you will hear a song and think " I wonder what the history and development of that song is?"

I am hoping he does another workshop in Chicago in November. I will go if he does.

Do'nt miss the chance to see this.
