Hi Guy's
You may recall I asked the question a few days ago. How do you get the Chord Letters to display above the measures.. Well I posted the same query over on the TablEdit Forum and Matthieu has modified TablEdit to do this automaticly... No need to type-in those letters anymore..
Here's how, File/ Options/ check Automatic Chord Diagrams and then check Chords as Text Only.. The Diagrams are hidden and the Chord Letters are displayed instead.
That should cut down the workload. No red diamonds to clutter up the staff either. Wow today has been a good day.
Hi Guys
How do you get chord letters to display above the measures using the Chords as Text Feature. I don't want the Chord Diagrams to display just the letters.... G C D Am Em etc.......

Go to the EDIT function on the top toolbar. Select the text manager. You need to write the specific thing you want - G, Am, etc. one you have all the chords listed you can then put your cursor on the right location, select the chord from the text manager, and click insert.

I follow Eagle Islands advice...
The only exception...
I work the entire arrangement out first...
When I'm ready for chord symbols, I insert the first three or four and then copy paste all 'G's, 'C's, 'D's, 'em's, etc...
Seems to speed the process up some...
If I have an arrangement with a fair amount of repeated measures in a row, I complete the first group, add the chord symbols and picks hand fingering, and then copy paste throughout...
At my cabin in the woods, it's a tablature production line...
Anything that streamlines the process gets considered and invoked!
Tom

Hi Tam,
An even quicker way is open your tab go to the T in the palette where you see a C chord diagram, and click on that and it will bring up your chord text box where you can just add the chords you want--caps or lower case.
If you put your cursor on the note and then right click on the hand palette finger with a right mouse it will automatically put the chord letter below the tab.
If you want the chord letter above the the tab staff then simply click on the pick strokes and fingerings button right next to the 1/4 note =, check in "above tablature" and it will put the finger above the tab.
Another benefit of this method is that it eliminates all those markers which can clutter up tabs.
To me, this is much quicker and you can also choose whether you want the fingers above or below the tab...Jack Baker

Hi Jack
Im not sure I quite follow, I'm a bit slow on the uptake, so please bear with me.
It's this bit that confuses me
If you put your cursor on the note and then right click on the hand palette finger with a right mouse it will automatically put the chord letter below the tab.
If you want the chord letter above the the tab staff then simply click on the pick strokes and fingerings button right next to the 1/4 note =, check in "above tablature" and it will put the finger above the tab.
I tried this but I ended up with a number 2 inside a circle below the TAB which I couldn't figure out how to remove. Can't figure out where the chord letters are do I need to create these. What do I do when I don't know what the chord is ? ( I am messing around with guitar TAB - I don't play guitar so hence the question)
Another benefit of this method is that it eliminates all those markers which can clutter up tabs
This is exactly what I am after - I hate all the clutter of the diagrams and little red tralngles imbeded in the TAB I much prefer minimum clutter.

Hi Tam,
I really am not capable of explaining it any better--sorry Tam. When I say the "note" I'm talking about the tablature number on the string not in the notation. Matthieu taught me this quick and cleaner method years ago and I've been using it ever since. If other explanations work easier for you then I would go with those methods...Jack

I can't get the hand palette to add anything but right hand fingering.
Jack, can you post a tab where you have added chord names (G, D, C, etc) above a measure using your trick technique. (i.e. adding the chord name without a marker showing up in the tab)

Hi Mick,
Ah! Now I see my error in explaining my method and thanks for pointing that out. Let me explain it the new way below:
"An even quicker way is open your tab go to the T in the palette where you see a C chord diagram, and click on that and it will bring up your chord text box where you can just add the chords you want--caps or lower case"
You can then select whether to put the chord letter "above or below the tablature" by just checking in the text position you want. This will allow you to put your chord letter above or below the tablature.
The rest of my post was to explain how to put in the fingers above or below the tablature and that is what confused Tam. Here's what I wrote with regards to entering fingers in a tab.
I wrote:
"If you put your cursor on the tablature note and then right click on the hand palette finger it will automatically put the fingers below the tab"
"If you want the fingerings above the the tab staff then simply click on the pick strokes and fingerings button right next to the 1/4 note =, check in "above tablature" and it will put the fingers above the tab"
I hope this corrects my original post Mick...Jack

Here's how, File/ Options/ check Automatic Chord Diagrams and then check Chords as Text Only.. The Diagrams are hidden and the Chord Letters are displayed instead.
That should cut down the workload. No red diamonds to clutter up the staff either. Wow today has been a good day.
The Automatic Chord Diagram feature doesn't seem to work well for banjo. It often produces some bazaar results (wrong chords, etc.)

Mick,
I rarely ever use the "auto chord" diagram feature for banjo or guitar. It analyzes the chord tones in a particular measure and then assigns them what are sometimes odd chord shapes to my reckoning. It does however, put in approximate fingerings.
This is unnecessary with regards to most banjo tabs though and I just use the Chord letter as I've mentioned above..Jack
