Hi, I am a newbie here and have already looked through the forum to see if i can find an answer to my problem - perhaps someone can help?
So far I can only find references online to using an emulator such as wine to read the TabEdit files and I would rather not go down that avenue. If it is the last resort I can use windows as i have a partitioned hard-drive however it's a nuisance and I would much rather find a solution.
I use Linux ubuntu and cannot open tabs when I download them, I cannot open .tef files. Can anyone out there help? i would imaging that there must be a few linux heads around here somewhere...

Well, the "official" word is that because TablEdit works under Wine, there are no plans to do a Limux version of TE or the free viewer/player, tefview.exe.
As an Ubuntu user myself, I can vouch for the fact that TablEdit works OK under Wine, and installing Wine is easy. Using TE or TV does take a bit longer to load, as it has to load the emulator first, but we're only talking seconds here.
OTOH, if someone has a native Linux .tef reader, I'd love to know, too. ![]()
Cheers,
ZEPP

Hi Zepp, thanks for such a quick reply :)
It seems that I have solved my own problem, I did a search for ".tef reader in linux" on google and browsed through the responses.
Two linux programs featured - Kguitar kguitar.sourceforge.net/screen.php and Tuxguitar ohloh.net/p/tuxguitar Both were source forge projects so I felt confident that they would be safe. I went for tuxguitar and downloaded using my synaptic package manager. The download was fine.
I tried to open a tab that I had downloaded earlier and was disappointed to find that i still couldn't read it so I checked out the program help files and found out that there is a batch file converter included. I simply created two new folders, one for the tef files and one for the converted files and then did a batch conversion - bingo!
I also found another program that may be useful - Canorus runs on Linux, Windows and Mac OS X. sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki...Main_Page
If anyone uses Canorus I would love to hear some feedback...

Tuxguitar should work. If you go to File > Import > Import Tef and select your file, it loads that way. For some reason it doesn't work if you the .tef file from a file browser.
