okay i have $400 to spend. I was thinking about getting the AT4033 to have as a mic for recording vocals and banjo/guitar/piano/ a bunch of other badly played instruments. I also want to use it for playing live with my band as a single mic (doing the mic dance) or to just pick up two instruments or just vocals. But i was talking with a friend who studied audio engineering and he said i should go for a cheaper LDC and get a SDC to mic a fret board or our bass player.
Is the extra $200 bucks really going to make that much of an impact on LDC?

I went in with my band and tested out several single mics for live applications. We ended up spending $400 on a Rode NT2-A and could not be happier with the sound. Admittedly we didn't put it head to head with the 4033 but the clarity and separation of instruments in the Rode totally blew the cheaper mics out of the water. If it broke we would replace it, no question.

Professional recording engineer since 1981- here's my 2 cents worth. Either of those mics will do the job well. If it were my choice I'd go with the AT. Only because I think the low end Rode mics, although good mics for the money, tend to color the signal a bit. AT also makes a CL version of the 4033, which is a cardioid pattern only, which might also work for you.
