From Greylock to Bean Blossom - Posted - 03/14/2011:  10:53:15

Recently I tried to attach a 40 second .wmv video to an e-mail. It would not send because it exceeded the 25MB attachment size limit.

Can anyone tell me how to condense a .wmv file so I can e-mail them? I don't know if makes a difference but it was made with a logitech camera.

Thanks,
Ken

Ken

Load you movie into window movie maker (if you are running a PC). Once you have it loaded, you can save it as an 'email attachment" and it will compress it to a smaller size, usually 10 MB or less.
I can show you how on Skype, if you have time someday.

wav files are too big. Get a file converter (free online) and turn it into an MP3.

Switch is one program. I use All2MP3

Just google for a "free wav to mp3 converter." Some are free "trials"... so make sure you know what you're signing up for.

I wore it for my wedding. Otherwise, if you were closer, I'd lend it to you.

You could also own it yourself...

He's talking about a .wMv file which is a video, not a .wAv sound file.

Oops. Dang ADD (that and being preoccupied). My dad used to say "slow down, son." There's wisdom in that. Sorry for the missQ.

Thanks, Graham

Yeah uploading to youtube is the best route for sending movies since you don't have to worry about file size or codec.

Sean,
Doesn't uploading to youtube put it public on the youtube site?

You can set any video on Youtube to private under the video settings.

If you'd prefer to avoid Youtube then posting your system info and any apps you may have would be helpful for more specific advice.

If you want to attach the vid as an email, theres no need to upload to youtube at all. Using windows movie maker to compress it for email is built into the system. Its easy and free and saves you time

John,
Thanks for your help again. I put my video (40 seconds of banjo butchering) into windows movie maker and it broke it into segments. ( I didn't realize that and thought it was complete. That is why you got the partial the other day.) But it doesn't condense it, it stayed at 25 MB which is limits it on my sender. I found the send as e-mail button but it stayed the same size. I read the instructions on the movie maker. There is obvioulsy some key I am missing. I will look again at it.
Thanks,
Ken

I recently converted a 25 Meg mp3 video using Windows movie maker and it ended up as a 3.7meg file. I then posted it on Youtube. It was actually quite easy to use. That's just to demonstrate that it does significantly reduce file size when used. The wmv. file extension is what it ended up as, so it would be totally understandable that it would not have reduced the file size if you started out with a large wmv. file.

I finally got something going. I had a 25mg .wmv and windows movie maker reduced it to 12.5. my video was only 48 seconds long so I don't understand why I am not getting the same reduction you have. That gives me concern because then it reasons I can only send a 1:40 video. Maybe my thought process is wrong as I am a bad tech guy.
Thanks for responding.

Ken,
I was converting a mp3 video format to a wmv. file. That's the reason for the ratio of compression that I had. It sounds like you were already using the wmv format to start with.

Thanks Rudy,
Makes sense. I don't always see the forest for the trees.

You can go to your tool bar and click on 'select all clips'. Then click on "combine' and it will put them all together again. You then drag it down to the timeline and add titles, etc. Then save it as an email attachment as usual.
