I have a little preamp i come out of and go to my video camera to inconjuntion with a line from my digital recorders back-up tracks. The problem is i have to guesstimate the level on this pre amp.Is there such a thing as a stand alone v u meter i can patch in?

Doubt you could find a stand alone VU meter for such an application. If you did, it would have to be purpose-built so that its impedance matched the lines you are monitoring. Your video camera line input should have some sort of AGC (Automatic Gain Control) that should allow it to handle a wide range of line level signals. If, however, you are feeding a line level signal into a mike input on your camera you could very well overload the camera input.

i got a patch chord to lower the line level down,i may have to go for a pre amp with a meter that, sounds like money.

what you will have to have, is a buffered VU meter.

Here's one with unbalanced 1/8" I/O's.

Here's one with XLR I/O's & comes with 1/4" TRS adapters.

I also know you can go to eBay and get vu meters pretty darn cheap. although I don't know how you hook them up. Probably depends on the kind you buy.
