Just curious what tuning folks use to play Ragtime Annie. I use GCGBD capoed up 2 to D.

I was shown years ago to play that out of D formation using G tuning and capo the 5th string capo at the second position. But the finger board is a field of opportunity!

Another Double D player here. If you are thinking in terms of the third part the single D tuning doesn't help - it is good for tunes in D and A but Ragtime Annie is in D and G. I find that a lot of tunes that go from D to G just lay out nicely on Double D.

If you are interested in what I say and would like to know more, it ony cost the price of an email. Write me at:
oldwoodchuckb@yahoo.com
and I will send you a copy of the entire Rocket Science Banjo with all the text now in PDF, plus all the exercise tabs and jpgs as well as "25 tunes" (which is now up to about 38) in banjo tab, playable with the MIDI built into your computer, so you can play along at whatever speed you choose to set.
put RSB in the subject line.
I neither keep nor re-use your email

I pick in three finger style, and play Ragtime Annie in open D tuning, aDF#AD, like all my D tunes. I admit that the third part, which switches to the key of G, that's a real workout, especially if I'm playing my semi-fretless banjo.

I use double C, capoe'd if I'm in a jam. If I'm alone, I often leave it in c. I do play the third part.

Std. C capoed at 2, like Dave. That's where Walt Koken plays it, and I've never heard the equal of his version.

Bill-

Have you ever heard David Holt's fine version? That's the standard C version that inspired me.

I use Open C tuning (gCGCE) which helps with the third part. If you're interested in what it sounds like in this tuning, I've included a sound file. Sorry it's so slow; it was meant as an aid to the tab and so I purposely dropped the tempo...

Hope I didn't add to the confusion with yet another tuning!

Egad. Might be I got that wrong on Holt's tuning. I thought all this time he did it in classic C/D.
